Text 1
M: Aw, man! My pencil broke again! And I forgot to bring another one.
W: You are the only person I know who still uses pencils to take notes in class. Everyone else uses either a pen or a computer.
Text 2
W: When will the phone be repaired?
M: They promised us by Wednesday before noon.
W: Last week they said Monday afternoon.
Text 3
M: Do you always skip your lunch? Because I don’t think you’ve eaten anything at noon.
W: I am skipping lunch lately because I’m too heavy!
Text 4
M: Could you do me favor and read over these materials for me?
W: Sure. What are they for?
M: They are for the presentation to the new clients, and I really want to do a good job because the president and the director of the board will be sitting in.
Text 5
W: Would you like to come mountain climbing with us?
M: That’s the last thing in the world I ever want to do.
Text 6
M: So Mel, have you been asked for an interview yet?
W: Yes. I already have an interview scheduled with the manager on Wednesday.
M: Oh, that’s the day after tomorrow. Congratulations! Where will the interview be held?
W: In a building which is very close to where you work. We can meet up then and I’ll tell you about it over some coffee.
Text 7
W: My car doesn’t always start in the morning and it often makes me late for work. I think I’d better buy a new car.
M: Gina, you should go to Jimmy’s Garage. I take my car there all the time. They have 20 years of experience and they are especially good at repairing older cars.
W: Thank you. The last time I took my car to a garage, they didn’t really settle the problem.
M: Well, you should call and make an appointment now. They do a good job. They’re usually not busy after 6 o’clock.
Text 8
W: Hello, Leo. How was India?
M: Tiring. Our connecting flight from Mumbai was delayed several times.
W: What caused the delay?[
M: Well, we had to go to a port miles from a big city and there wasn’t a major airport nearby. The closest airport was a military base which is something used by a local airline.
W: So what time was your flight due to leave?
M: At 10:30 in the morning, but they told us it would leave at 12:30, then at 2:00 and then at 3:30 at last.
W: Perhaps there was a technical problem or a storm.
M: Perhaps, but the military do not allow civil flight to land after 5:00. So we had to fly to another airport further away from our destination.
W: That must have been frustrating.
M: Yes, it was.
Text 9
W: Hey, mike. Over here!
M: Hi. It’s great to see you. Been waiting long?
W: No, not at all. What do you want to have?
M: Just a salad. So, how’s the new apartment working out?
W: Good. I like it. The neighborhood, though, is …well, some of the buildings down the street are covered with terrible pictures drawn by teenagers.
M: I know what you mean. I think we need to report people who are drawing to the police.
M: Yes. And I like all the stores. It’s convenient for shopping … and it’s pretty quiet at night. That’s definitely a plus.
M: Sounds like you are pretty satisfied.
W: Yeah, I guess so. Uh, the only problem is that it is impossible to find parking. I have to drive around the block six or seven times to find a space. Usually I can find a space. Usually, I can find one, but sometimes I have to park really far away.
M: Well, is there any way you can rent space in a garage?
W: Yeah, that’s a good idea. So, how are things in your neighborhood?
M: There is a bit of noise problem where I live. I live right down the street from a school. The bell rings every morning at 7:30. it is impossible to sleep in.
Text 10
M: Hi, Ms Lawrence, I am fed up with spending my summer holidays in the same place year after year. So, when I saw your advertisement, I thought I’d make a phone call and ask you about the cruise holiday around the Mediterranean Sea.
It isn’t clear in your ad when the cruise holiday is scheduled to begin. Are there fixed dates during the summer or can we choose when we want to go? You see, my wife, Pamela, and I would rather go at the end of August. As we also like shopping, do you think we’ll have time to go shopping at every port? Some friends of ours went to Spain last year and they found some real bargains! Since we’ve never traveled on a cruise ship before, will we have lots of things to do on board? I suppose there will be a fully equipped gym at least!
However, I’m mostly interested in finding out how much this is going to cost. Will I have to put my hand real deep in my pocket? You say that there are special offers, especially for families with children. We are taking our twin daughters, Emily and Julie, aged 5, with us, so I’m really anxious to find out the total cost as soon as possible. Thank you.

A child genius joined the likes of Charles Dickens, Stephen Hawking and David Attenborough after becoming the Royal Society of the Arts’ youngest fellow.
Monty Lord, 15, has broken numerous world records and gave a UN lecture about his research on the effects of kids using technology at bedtime. His accomplishments have now been recognized by the RSA, which is made up of the world’s brightest minds and advocates social progress and knowledge.
Last year, Monty set new world records by using his memory to identify 129 books by their first lines. Then he identified their titles by their lead characters from memory.
The keen reader likes choosing topics of books to encourage the written words. He became fascinated by the subject of memory when he completed a module in the subject while doing a long-distance course in psychology. The ambitious teen uses visual techniques to connect the characters to their titles.
He has created his own recall methods that have proven so successful during his record-breaking that he has been invited by two schools to train their students. Monty’s headteacher said, “We’ve had a real push to encourage our young people to believe that they can achieve anything that they put their minds to and Monty has done just that.”

Many teens may feel anxious sometimes. It's the kind of nervousness that makes you bite your fingers before a big test. We spend more time online than we should. We feel good about ourselves or bad based on how many Likes and Followers we get on social media. Young people are developing a wrong view of life.
On the screen, we see what people want to show us. People usually only post photos where they are looking at their best. They meet friends around them and seem that they are having a great time. No one seems sad or lonely. In short, life is wonderful. But sooner or later, our young people compare their real life to it. They find that theirs doesn't seem as fun or exciting and grow worried that they may be missing out.
No wonder teachers are reporting more anxious students. It's reported that a lot more college students feel —too much anxiety. The percentage jumped from 50% in 2016 to 62% in 2021. Anxiety is now the most common mental-health problem in my country. It affects nearly one-third of teens and adults.
Certainly, we can't blame (责备)it on social media alone. We expect too much from our children and a lot of these expectations aren't reasonable. Their plans are packed with sports, clubs and homework. They don't have enough free time. We want our children to succeed, and we don't care how much it costs.
As parents, we must have more balance. On one hand, we push too hard, and on the other hand, we make life too easy for children. We shouldn't and can't promise our children that they will always be happy. We shouldn't try to protect them from the problems of everyday life. Let them solve the problems in person.
28. What does the underlined word “theirs” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A. Young people's life. B. Young people's friends.
C. Young people's photos. D. Young people's parents.
29. What does the fourth paragraph concentrate on?
A. The cost from parents. B. The duty of social media.
C. The hobbies of young people. D. The expectations from parents.
30. What does the writer suggest parents do in the last paragraph?
A. Try to meet teens' expectations. B. Help teens with their homework.
C. Give teens more free time to play sports. D. Allow teens to solve their own problems in life.
31. Which is the best title for the text?
A. What Causes Teens' Nervousness B. How to Deal with Teens' Anxiety
C. How to Treat Social Media Suitably D. What a View of Life Means to People

上文“But sooner or later, our young people compare their real life to it.( 但迟早,我们的年轻人会把他们的现实生活与之进行比较)”说明青少年迟早会把他们的现实生活与网上的生活比较,结合划线句“They find that theirs doesn't seem as fun or exciting and grow worried that they may be missing out.( 他们发现他们的……看起来没有那么有趣或令人兴奋,并越来越担心他们可能正在错过机会)”可推断,theirs指代的“年轻人的现实生活”,故选A。
29. 主旨大意题。根据第四段内容“Certainly, we can't blame (责备)it on social media alone. We expect too much from our children and a lot of these expectations aren't reasonable. Their plans are packed with sports, clubs and homework. They don't have enough free time. We want our children to succeed, and we don't care how much it costs.( 当然,我们不能只是责备社交媒体。我们对孩子的期望太高,很多期望都是不合理的。他们的计划充满了运动、俱乐部和家庭作业。他们没有足够的空闲时间。我们希望我们的孩子能成功,但我们不在乎成本多少)”可知,本段主要介绍了父母对孩子的期待,故选D。
30. 细节理解题。根据最后一段“We shouldn’t try to protect them from the problems of everyday life. Let them solve the problems in person.( 我们不应该试图保护他们远离日常生活中的问题。让他们亲自解决问题。)”可知,父母应该让孩子自己解决生活中的问题,故选D。
31. 主旨大意题。根据第一段“Many teens may feel anxious sometimes. It's the kind of nervousness that makes you bite your nails before a big test. (许多青少年有时会感到焦虑。这种紧张会让你在大考前束手无策。)”,第三段“No wonder teachers are reporting more anxious students. It's reported that a lot more college students feel —too much anxiety. (难怪老师报告学生越来越焦虑。据报道,越来越多的大学生感到"极度焦虑"。 )以及最后一段的“We shouldn't and can't promise our children that they will always be happy. We shouldn't try to protect them from the problems of everyday life. Let them solve the problems in person.( 我们不应该也不能向我们的孩子保证他们会永远快乐。我们不应该试图保护他们免受日常生活问题的影响。让他们亲自解决这些问题吧。)”可知这篇文章主要介绍当代学生的焦虑状态,并给出了解决办法。 因此推断B.How to deal with teens' anxiety. (如何处理青少年的焦虑)为最佳标题。故选B.

A new officer with the Huntington Park Police patrols (巡逻) local parks 24 hours a day seven days a week. He doesn't need rest, coffee breaks, a salary or medical insurance, and that is because it is a Robocop.
The main function of the Robocop is to scan and film the surroundings. How to be a great conversationalist
Although I think there is much for me to learn in the area of communication, I’ve been told by my friends that I’m a great person to speak to. 36 In fact, I don’t think there are any “tricks” you have to use to be a great conversationalist. Below are some rules I apply in all my conversations:
Focus on the positives. Go for the positive topics. Instead of talking about past sadness, choose a discussion of future goals. 37 Less complaining, more solutions. Less judging, more understanding. Doing more of the latter (后者) will make you a more enjoyable person to speak to.
Respect others. Respect other people’s point of view. 38 Respect other people’s privacy. Respect other people’s personal choices; don’t criticize or judge. Remember, everyone has his right to be himself, just as you have the right to be yourself.
39 Your best asset (财富) is your true personality. Value it and let it shine. Don’t cover it up. It’ll be pretty boring if you just repeat the other person’s words during a conversation. Be ready to share your real thoughts and opinions and let others know the real you.
50-50 sharing. I always think that a great conversation should be made up of equal sharing by both the people involved in it. 40 But in general, both should have equal opportunities to share and contribute to the conversation.
A. Be true to yourself.
B. Be truly interested in the person.
C. It’s fine to express your opinion, but don’t force them to accept it.
D. During your conversations, always take a forward-thinking attitude.
E. There’s no need to have a conclusion or agreement in every discussion.
F. Sometimes it may be 40-60 or 60-40 depending on the circumstances.
G. It seems that I have a talent for having conversations go on without boring others.

36. 根据上文“Although I think there is much for me to learn in the area of communication, I’ve been told by my friends that I’m a great person to speak to. (虽然我认为在交流方面我还有很多需要学习的地方,但我的朋友告诉我,我是一个非常适合交谈的人)”可知,此处内容与作者讲述自己具有交谈的天赋有关,选项G“It seems that I have a talent for having conversations go on without boring others. (我似乎有一种天赋,能让谈话继续下去而不让别人感到厌烦)”符合题意。故选G。

Be smart online learners
Network learning has increasingly become an important means for people to acquire knowledge and solve problems. But being smart online learners has its advantages and disadvantages.
First of all, as smart online learners, we can make full use of the most extensive educational resources to broaden the horizon. Besides, we can take the initiative in our study by ourselves without time and space limit.
Of course, these disadvantages are as follows. Faced with all kinds of information on the internet, we can't tell the difference between the true and the false, which may be harmful to our study and life. On the other hand, online learning itself has some imperfections, making it difficult for us not to be affected.
In conclusion, we should have a good understanding of its advantages and disadvantages and find a proper way to make our study more efficient.
Jenny was the only child in her home. She had a quarrel (争吵) with her mother that afternoon and she ran out of the house angrily.
She couldn’t help crying sadly when she thought of the scolding (指责) from her mother. Having wandered aimlessly in the street for hours, she felt a little hungry and wished for something to eat, but it was not possible for her, since she had nothing with her. She stood beside a stand for a while, watching the middle-aged seller busy doing his business. However, with no money in hand, she had to leave.
The seller behind the stand noticed the young girl and asked, “Hey, girl, you want to have the noodles?”
“Oh, yes…, but I don’t have money on me...” she replied.
“That’s nothing. I’ll treat you today,” said the man, “come in.” The seller brought her a bowl of noodles, whose smell was so attractive. As she was eating, Jenny cried silently.
“What is it?” asked the man kindly.
“Nothing, actually I was just touched by your kindness!” said Jenny as she dried her tears, “Even a stranger on the street will give me a bowl of noodles, while my mother, drove me out of the house. She showed no care for me. She is so cruel compared to a stranger! !”
Hearing the words, the seller smiled, “Girl, do you really think so? I only gave you a bowl of noodles and you thanked me a lot. But it is your mother who has raised you since you were a baby. Can you number the times she cooked for you? Have you expressed your thanks to her?”
Jenny sat there, speechless; she remembered mother’s familiar face and weathered hands. “Why did I not think of that? A bowl of noodles from a stranger made me feel thankful, but I have never thanked my mum for what she has done for me.”
On the way home, Jenny made up her mind to make an apology to her mother for her rudeness as soon as she arrived home.

One possible version:
Paragraph 1:
Approaching the doorway, Jenny took a deep breath. When she knocked at the door, she found the door was locked and her mother was not in. Tired and sad, she sat down in front of the house. “Where could my mother be?” she wondered, “Was she still angry with me?” Again, the scene of the quarrel appeared in her mind. She remembered her rudeness to her mother. Realizing that all the scolding from her mother was due to the fact that her mother really cared a lot about her, she felt rather ashamed, and tears began to roll down her cheeks.
Paragraph 2:
A gentle touch on her hair called her mind back. She raised her head and saw the familiar face of her mother. “Here you come! I’ve been looking for you,” she said, tired and relieved. Jenny couldn’t help throwing herself into her mother’s arms. “Mum, I’m so sorry and thank you for all you have done for me.” She expressed her sincere apology and great gratitude. Hearing this, her mother smiled patting her back gently.
