When girls play with cars, they're serious. It was at primary school that Gu Huijing first became interested in cars after watching some car-themed movies. Born in 2004 in Shenzhen, Guangdong province, Gu decided to major in automobiles (汽车) when she was in junior high.
She's driven by interest, but she is also a realist. “I think the future of the automobile industry is bright because we cannot live without food, clothes, houses and cars,” she said.
In April, she won first prize at a competition for vehicle maintenance (车辆维修) in Dongguan city, which drew 33 teams from different cities across the province.
“I thought it couldn't be that hard to repair cars when I started to take courses, but I was totally wrong,” Gu said. When she started learning in 2019, she was frequently confused by various problems. “And competition within our school is intense, so I had to work extra hard,” she said.
Her teacher once tried to persuade her to give up as she was a sophomore (大二学生), and wasn't as knowledgeable as the seniors, and no women had ever been selected for the competition before. “But I insisted that I would carry on,” she said. Finally, her training and hard work won her the only place to stand for her school at the competition.
A woman winning first prize in a vehicle maintenance competition became a hot topic on-line, causing heated discussions over gender (性别) and career choices. “Women should not be influenced by old-fashioned thinking, and should do whatever it takes to discover their interests and strengths. There are more possibilities out there,” one netizen wrote.
Gu said, “Many people think vehicle maintenance is a job for men. That's wrong. I don't think gender has anything to do with choice of jobs.” “I have a goal and I will work harder to make it happen,” she added. “I will be responsible for my choices.”
24. What was a cause of Gu's choosing automobiles as her major?
A. The love for automobiles.
B. The guidance from her parents.
C. The high popularity of automobiles.
D. The determination to contribute to society.
25. Why did Gu's teacher advise her to quit the competition?
A. She lacked the knowledge related to it.
B. She had never taken part in a competition before.
C. She was unlikely to win the competition.
D. Women were not allowed to enter the competition.
26. Which of the following best describes Gu Huijing?
A. Creative and caring. B. Determined and hard-working.
C. Independent and humorous. D. Honest and courageous.
27. What would be the best title for the text?
A. There Is No End To Learning
B. Teenage Girl Wins Car Repair Contest
C. Vehicle Maintenance Catches On
D. Taking Challenge Leads To Success

TikTok has pushed a new safety update in November to its app that allows parents to take more control of their teenager’s accounts, as social media companies come under increasing pressure to make their platforms safer for children.
The company said Tuesday that its “Family Pairing” feature now enables parents to turn off comments on their children’s videos entirely or to limit them to friends only. Parents whose accounts are linked to their kids will also be able to set their accounts to private, turn off the search function for content, users or sounds, and limit who can see which videos their children have liked.
Launched in March, the Family Pairing tool lets parents see how long their children are spending on TikTok each day and limit the content they can see.
TikTok allows children to register and create an account if they’re over the age of 13. All they need to do is provide their date of birth. However, because TikTok doesn’t require registers to prove their identities, some children under 13 have registered by lying about their age, according to U.K. regulator Ofcom(英国通讯管理局).
Alexandra Evans, head of child safety public policy for TikTok in Europe, told CNBC that Family Pairing has “put itself in parents’ shoes” since it was launched.
“If we’re thinking about it as a toolbox, we wanted to offer more tools,” she said on a video call ahead of the announcement.
28. What pushed TikTok to launch the new update?
A. The pressure from social media B. The concern about kids’ online safety
C. The force from government D. The increasing need of users
29. What is the second paragraph mainly about?
A. The safety tips from TikTok B. New apps explored by TikTok
C. New functions of Family Pairing D. The limits on Family Pairing
30. What’s Evans attitude towards the new Family Piaring?
A. Uninterested B. Objective C. Disappointed D. Supportive
31. What might be the best title of the passage?
A. TikTok’s Safety Update B. New Guidelines for Safety
C. Family Pairing under Debate D. Controlling Your Kids Online

When you were trying to figure out what to buy for the environmentalist on your holiday list, fur probably didn’t cross your mind. But some ecologists and fashion (时装) enthusiasts are trying to bring back the market for fur made from nutria(海狸鼠).
Unusual fashion shows in New Orleans and Brooklyn have showcased nutria fur made into clothes in different styles. “It sounds crazy to talk about guilt-free fur unless you understand that the nutria are destroying vast wetlands every year”, says Cree McCree, project director of Righteous Fur.
Scientists in Louisiana were so concerned that they decided to pay hunters $5 a tail. Some of the fur ends up in the fashion shows like the one in Brooklyn last month.
Nutria were brought there from Argentina by fur farmers and let go into the wild. “The ecosystem down there can’t handle this non-native species(物种). It’s destroying the environment. It’s them or us." says Michael Massimi, an expert in this field.
The fur trade kept nutria check for decades, but when the market for nutria collapsed in the late 1980s, the cat-sized animals multiplied like crazy.
Biologist Edmond Mouton runs the nutria control program for Louisiana. He says it’s not easy to convince people that nutria fur is green, but he has no doubt about it. Hunters bring in more than 300,000 nutria tails a year, so part of Mouton’s job these days is trying to promote fur.
Then there’s Righteous Fur and its unusual fashion. Morgan says,“To give people a guilt-free option that they can wear without someone throwing paint on them—I think that’s going to be a massive thing, at least here in New York.” Designer Jennifer Anderson admits it took her a while to come around to the opinion that using nutria fur for her creations is morally acceptable. She is trying to come up with a label to attach to nutria fashions to show it is eco-friendly.
32. What is the purpose of the fashion shows in New Orleans and Brooklyn?
A. To promote guilt-free fur.
B. To expand the fashion market.
C. To introduce a new brand.
D. To celebrate a winter holiday.
33. Why are scientists concerned about nutria?
A. Nutria damage the ecosystem seriously.
B. Nutria are an endangered species.
C. Nutria hurt local cat-sized animals.
D. Nutria are illegally hunted.
34 What does the underlined word “collapsed” in paragraph 5 probably mean?
A. Boomed.
B. Became mature.
C. Remained stable.
D. Crashed.
35. What can we infer about wearing fur in New York according to Morgan?
A. It’s formal. B. It’s risky. C. It’s harmful. D. It’s traditional.

Q: How does your organization use technology to fight hunger?

Two men, both seriously ill, occupied the same hospital room. The doctors didn't hold too much hope for their recovery. “What both of them need is a miracle,” they said. One man's bed was next to the room's only window. The other man had to spend all his time flat on his back. The men talked for hours on end. They spoke of their wives and families, their homes, their jobs, their involvement in the military service, where they had been on vacation. The companionship grew stronger as time went by.
Every afternoon when the man in the bed by the window could sit up, he would pass the time by describing to his roommate all the things he could see outside the window. The man in the other bed began to live for those one-hour periods where his world would be broadened and enlivened by all the activity and color of the world outside. These periods gave him something to hold on to while he went through the pain of treatment.
The window overlooked a park with a lovely lake. Ducks and swans played on the water while children sailed their model boats. Young lovers walked arm in arm among flowers of every color and a fine view of the city skyline could be seen in the distance.
As the man by the window described all this in detail, the man on the other side of the room would close his eyes and imagine the amazing scenes. One warm afternoon the man by the window described a parade passing by. Although the other man couldn't hear the band, he could see it in his mind's eye as the gentleman by the window described it with vivid words.
