The theme of the reading and thinking is about “Learn about a country through its history”.
The Listening & Speaking & Talking is about the influence of Confucius before William visited Qufu and backpacker Paul talked about his feelings and experience after visiting the famous historic sites Pingyao, which shows that the foreigners are trying to learn about the history and culture about China. So it’s time and also necessary to learn other country’s histories and cultures, among which is the UK because we are learning its language---English. Not only can it is necessary for us to learn the language better, but it can help broaden the international horizons of students.
The reading and thinking part is about the UK. Students can learn its history of development and formation according to the time order. Specifically, firstly, the section answers the confusing question why the UK has so many names with the process of formation of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and their brotherly but independent relationship. Then, use brief words to explain the different invaders had different influences at different period of history, such as the government, town, road, language and food. Next, it introduces the caption London and its long history. At last, emphasize the importance and significance to learn its history and culture before learn the country.

Look at the maps below and answer the following questions:

Read map:When you look at a map, think first about what the map shows and what the symbols mean.Q1: What type of map do they show ?
    Its an administrative zoning map of the UK.
Q2: How many parts can you see that make up the UK in Map 1 ?
    It means four regions of the UK
Q3: Can you quickly find the capital of the UK on the map ? Why?
    Yes. The red circle stands for London.
Step 2 Before reading--- analyze the title      Read the title, what information can you get ?
            Whats in a name?
From the title and the map, we can know that the article mainly talks about the name’s changes of the UK, and it may be about the development of history. So it may be an exposition.

Read the text and match the main idea.

Step 6 Post reading---Retell the text
   The United Kingdom, Great Britain, Britain, England—many people are confused by (1)_____ these different names mean. In the 19 th century, the Kingdom of Ireland was added to create the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland.
