I was born in Bombay, India. When I was about 6 months old, my legs became paralyzed (麻痹的). My birth mother deserted (遗弃) me. I was adopted (收养) by an American family. I was taken to Spokane, Washington. It took me a long time to be able to walk, because I had to accept a number of operations.
When I was in the business school, one of my friends was training for a marathon. One day, she introduced me to an organization called Achilles International, which was a club for athletes with disabilities. It took me four months to get the courage to make the phone call. Dick Traum, the founder of Achilles, answered the phone. He asked me to show up on Tuesday and would lend me his bike. That was the first time that I had been able to feel the wind in my long hair. I rode really slowly, but it was the coolest feeling to ride a bicycle for the first time.
Later, I decided to take part in the Ironman World Championship. I was in a lot of pain, because I had to practice swimming, biking and running for over nine months.
On the day of the marathon, it took me 14 hours and 39 minutes to finish the Triathlon. After I crossed that finish line, I cried. I made it. It was my determination that made my dream come true.

The Internet plays a big part in human life. We use it for work and pleasure. We use it to learn a new language. We find advice on it. We use it to connect with family and friends. We use it to stay in touch with events we care about. The list goes on and on.
Well, that train has left the station. But can using the Internet too much be bad for our health? It might be, researchers say. A new study finds that heavy Internet use may be connected to high blood pressure in an unlikely group: teenagers.
High blood pressure makes your heart and blood vessels (血管) work too hard. Over time, this extra pressure increases your risk of a heart attack. High blood pressure can also cause heart and kidney (肾脏) diseases. It is also closely linked to a brain disease.
The Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan did the study. 335 young people, from 14 to 17 years old, took part in it. 134 of the teens were described as “heavy Internet users”. And researchers found that out of these 134 teens, 26 had high blood pressure. The researchers say the study is the first to connect heavy Internet use with high blood pressure. Other research has connected heavy Internet use with anxiety, depression and obesity (肥胖).
The lead researcher is Andrea Cassidy-Bushrow. She said, “Using the Internet is part of our daily life, but it shouldn't ruin us.” Ms Cassidy-Bushrow adds that it is important for teens to take regular breaks from their computers or smartphones and do some kind of physical activity. She also suggests that parents limit their children's use of the Internet to two hours a day, five days a week.
28. What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2 imply?
A. The Internet develops rapidly.
B. No one can escape from the Internet.
C. The Internet can provide whatever we want.
D. There is no going back to an Internet-free life.

A. Causes of high blood pressure.        B. The harm of high blood pressure.
C. The disadvantages of Internet use.        D. Ways to prevent high blood pressure.
30. Which of the following statements may Andrea Cassidy-Bushrow agree with?
A. Teenagers shouldn't use the Internet.
B. The Internet will ruin human life in the future.
C. Smartphones are more harmful than computers.
D. Regular breaks are necessary when teens are using the Internet.
31. What does the text mainly tell us?
A. Heavy Internet users are mostly teenagers.
B. We should prevent teenagers from the Internet.
C. Too much Internet use may be bad for teenagers.
D. Every coin has two sides — so does the Internet.
D
Scientists from Imperial College London have found that using virtual reality(VR)headsets can reduce sensitivity to pain, by immersing people in icy Arctic scenery. In a study published in Pain Reports, a team from Imperial used VR video to reduce people’s sensitivity to ongoing pain and sharp shooting pain.
According to the researchers, the findings add to the growing evidence for the potential of VR technology to help patients with long-term pain. Beyond the distracting effect, they think VR may actually cause the body’s own inbuilt pain-fighting systems to start working.
Dr Sam Hughes, the first author on the paper, said "Our work suggests that VR may be getting involved in processes in the key parts of our inbuilt pain-fighting systems and are helpful in regulating the spread of increased sensitivity to pain.
To test their theory, researchers applied a cream containing capsaicinthe chemical that makes your mouth bum-to 15 healthy volunteers. The capsaicin makes the skin more sensitive to painful stimuli like a very small electric shock.
In the first trial, participants were then asked to rate the pain caused by the capsaicin cream on a scale of 0-100 (from 'no pain' to 'worst pain possible' )while either watching a VR scene of Arctic exploration through a headset, or looking at a still image of an Arctic scene on a monitor. Under the same conditions, they were also asked to say when a stimulus applied directly to the skin area is considered as painful.
The team found that ongoing pain was reduced following VR immersion, and that sensitivity to painful stimuli was also reduced. However, the same effect was not seen in people who looked at still images of the polar environment.
They explain that while the findings made at the beginning are encouraging, the study is limited by the small number of healthy participants, without long-term pain. However, the researchers believe VR could hold a bright future to treat patients with long-term pain who have poor inbuilt pain fighting systems.
32. How can VR possibly help long-term pain sufferers?
A. By controlling the spread of pain sensitivity.        B. By slowing down their brains' reaction to pain.
C. By making their pain-fighting systems function.        D. By drawing their attention to fighting pain.
33. Which step comes first in their theory testing?
A. Applying capsaicin cream to the skin.        B. Looking at pictures on a computer screen.
C. Making a capsaicin cream.        D. Putting on virtual reality headsets.
34. What conclusion can be drawn from the trial?
A. Healthy people were less sensitive to VR than pain sufferers.
B. Capsaicin cream brought people more pain than electronic stimulus.
C. Still images helped to ease people's pain.
D. VR immersion was the key factor in pain reduction.
35. What does the last paragraph imply?
A. VR treatment can be applied in other medical fields.
B. The trial only has an effect on short-term pain patient.
C. The team feels confident about future VR treatment.
D. The researchers will work on the side effect of VR.

The Feel-Good Shoebox
Catherine sat on her bed with her chin in her hands. “Why aren't you getting ready for Grandma's birthday party?”asked Mother.
“I can't bake like Sylvia or knit like Anne,” Catherine grumbled. “They made good presents. All I made for her is an ugly card.” “It's a lovely card. And no one can be good at everything,” said Mother. She sat on the bed next to Catherine. “When I was your age, I felt sad when I couldn't do certain things. But one day Grandma showed me the shoebox game, and it made me feel a lot better.” Catherine frowned (皱眉). “How can a shoebox make me feel better”“Youll see” said Mother. She disappeared down the hall, then came back carrying a shoe box, a pencil, paper, and scissors.
Catherine watched as Mother cut several pieces of paper into squares. “Nôw, I want you to write down all the things you can do,” said Mother. “Like what?” asked Catherine. “Why not start with things you've learned in school? Give it some thought while I ice Grandma's birthday cake.”
Catherine sat for a while wrinkling (起皱纹) and unwrinkling her eyebrows.Slowly Catherine began to write and write. Before long she had written on every square of paper. She was so busy that she didn't hear Mother come into the room.“My goodness!"said Mother.“Do you think they'll all fit in the shoebox?”“I hope so,” said Catherine. “It was fun thinking of all the stuff I can do.”“And the next time you feel sad because you can't do something, your feel-good shoebox will remind you of how much you can do-just as mine did when I was a little girl,” said Mother,“Now let's finish getting dressed for Grandma's party.”
