Text 1
M: Didn't you say you wanted to stop drinking coffee for a while?
W: I did. I was trying to drink tea or juice each morning instead of coffee. But it didn't go so well.
Text 2
W: Lucas, have you bought the cellphone you always want?
M: No. I have $500 now, but the phone costs $800. My boss said he would give me a rise next month.
Text 3
W: Is September really a good month to take cuttings of roses?
M: Well, it's the best month, because you don't need to protect them at all. You don't need a greenhouse. All you need is a bit of reasonably worked soil.
Text 4
M: Sarah worked as a journalist for a month, but she couldn't handle it successfully.
W: Why?
M: She wasn't able to finish her stories on time for the strict deadlines.
Text 5
W: We are trying to start a club.
M: How is it going?
W: We were hoping for at least fifteen people, but only two signed up.
Text 6
M: Why are you walking up and down in the room? Why not sit down just like me and watch the talk show about reading on TV?
W: Well, I'm worrying about the children. After all, this is the first time they have been out without us.
M: Don't worry. They are grown-ups. What's more, they are just having a party in their friend Mike's house.
W: I know. But I couldn't help thinking. George, please call them up, and tell them to be careful and come back earlier.
M: All right. I'll do that.
Text 7
M: I was thinking we should go to the local animal shelter, so I can pick out the perfect dog.
W: Yeah. Some dog really needs a good home.
M: OK. So we will just have the dog that you also want and no more unwanted animals.
W: Sure. What kind of dog are you going to get?
M: I don't know. I will know when I see the dog if that's the dog for me.
W: All right. Take me to the shelter. Can't wait.
Text 8
M: Excuse me, are you Anita Handley?
W: Yes, that's me. How can I help you?
M: I represent Comfort Tour. We're looking for a British company to help us with marketing in Britain.
W: Ah, so you are looking for a British agent to represent you here? Is that right?
M: Yes, exactly.
W: Well, that's perfect. We already represent a number of companies, so I'm certainly interested in discussing a partnership of some kind.
M: Oh, what other partnerships do you have?
W: Well, we represent a large Japanese company and we have agreements with agents in Australia and Greece. We handle all their marketing in Britain.
M: That sounds great. Why don't we sit down and talk a bit more about it?
W: Fine. Let's get a coffee at the same time.
Text 9
W: What's that, Brett?
M: It's my new e-book reader. I'm just downloading some new books onto it.
W: I haven't bought one yet. I still prefer a printed book.
M: But if you haven't tried it yet, how do you know you wouldn't like it better, Fiona? This e-book reader can store over 10,000 digital books. Imagine trying to carry an entire library from place to place.
W: I don't usually read 10,000 books all at once and I like the look of text on a printed page.
M: You mean that faded text on that yellowed page? On an e-book reader, you can adjust the text size and even line spacing.
W: Can I get all of the out-of-print books on my shelves in digital format?
M: Well, I'm not sure.
W: Until I can, I'll stick to my low-tech books. Let's take our seats. The class is about to begin.

I was born in Bombay, India. When I was about 6 months old, my legs became paralyzed (麻痹的). My birth mother deserted (遗弃) me. I was adopted (收养) by an American family. I was taken to Spokane, Washington. It took me a long time to be able to walk, because I had to accept a number of operations.
When I was in the business school, one of my friends was training for a marathon. One day, she introduced me to an organization called Achilles International, which was a club for athletes with disabilities. It took me four months to get the courage to make the phone call. Dick Traum, the founder of Achilles, answered the phone. He asked me to show up on Tuesday and would lend me his bike. That was the first time that I had been able to feel the wind in my long hair. I rode really slowly, but it was the coolest feeling to ride a bicycle for the first time.
Later, I decided to take part in the Ironman World Championship. I was in a lot of pain, because I had to practice swimming, biking and running for over nine months.
On the day of the marathon, it took me 14 hours and 39 minutes to finish the Triathlon. After I crossed that finish line, I cried. I made it. It was my determination that made my dream come true.

The Internet plays a big part in human life. We use it for work and pleasure. We use it to learn a new language. We find advice on it. We use it to connect with family and friends. We use it to stay in touch with events we care about. The list goes on and on.
Well, that train has left the station. But can using the Internet too much be bad for our health? It might be, researchers say. A new study finds that heavy Internet use may be connected to high blood pressure in an unlikely group: teenagers.
High blood pressure makes your heart and blood vessels (血管) work too hard. Over time, this extra pressure increases your risk of a heart attack. High blood pressure can also cause heart and kidney (肾脏) diseases. It is also closely linked to a brain disease.
The Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan did the study. 335 young people, from 14 to 17 years old, took part in it. 134 of the teens were described as “heavy Internet users”. And researchers found that out of these 134 teens, 26 had high blood pressure. The researchers say the study is the first to connect heavy Internet use with high blood pressure. Other research has connected heavy Internet use with anxiety, depression and obesity (肥胖).
The lead researcher is Andrea Cassidy-Bushrow. She said, “Using the Internet is part of our daily life, but it shouldn't ruin us.” Ms Cassidy-Bushrow adds that it is important for teens to take regular breaks from their computers or smartphones and do some kind of physical activity. She also suggests that parents limit their children's use of the Internet to two hours a day, five days a week.
28. What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2 imply?
A. The Internet develops rapidly.
B. No one can escape from the Internet.
C. The Internet can provide whatever we want.
D. There is no going back to an Internet-free life.
29. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. Causes of high blood pressure. B. The harm of high blood pressure.
C. The disadvantages of Internet use. D. Ways to prevent high blood pressure.
30. Which of the following statements may Andrea Cassidy-Bushrow agree with?
A. Teenagers shouldn't use the Internet.
B. The Internet will ruin human life in the future.
C. Smartphones are more harmful than computers.
D. Regular breaks are necessary when teens are using the Internet.
31. What does the text mainly tell us?
A. Heavy Internet users are mostly teenagers.
B. We should prevent teenagers from the Internet.
C. Too much Internet use may be bad for teenagers.
D. Every coin has two sides — so does the Internet.

Scientists from Imperial College London have found that using virtual reality(VR)headsets can reduce sensitivity to pain, by immersing people in icy Arctic scenery. In a study published in Pain Reports, a team from Imperial used VR video to reduce people’s sensitivity to ongoing pain and sharp shooting pain.
According to the researchers, the findings add to the growing evidence for the potential of VR technology to help patients with long-term pain. Beyond the distracting effect, they think VR may actually cause the body’s own inbuilt pain-fighting systems to start working.
Dr Sam Hughes, the first author on the paper, said "Our work suggests that VR may be getting involved in processes in the key parts of our inbuilt pain-fighting systems and are helpful in regulating the spread of increased sensitivity to pain.
To test their theory, researchers applied a cream containing capsaicin—the chemical that makes your mouth bum-to 15 healthy volunteers. The capsaicin makes the skin more sensitive to painful stimuli like a very small electric shock.
In the first trial, participants were then asked to rate the pain caused by the capsaicin cream on a scale of 0-100 (from 'no pain' to 'worst pain possible' )while either watching a VR scene of Arctic exploration through a headset, or looking at a still image of an Arctic scene on a monitor. Under the same conditions, they were also asked to say when a stimulus applied directly to the skin area is considered as painful.
The team found that ongoing pain was reduced following VR immersion, and that sensitivity to painful stimuli was also reduced. However, the same effect was not seen in people who looked at still images of the polar environment.
They explain that while the findings made at the beginning are encouraging, the study is limited by the small number of healthy participants, without long-term pain. However, the researchers believe VR could hold a bright future to treat patients with long-term pain who have poor inbuilt pain fighting systems.
32. How can VR possibly help long-term pain sufferers?
A. By controlling the spread of pain sensitivity. B. By slowing down their brains' reaction to pain.
C. By making their pain-fighting systems function. D. By drawing their attention to fighting pain.
33. Which step comes first in their theory testing?
A. Applying capsaicin cream to the skin. B. Looking at pictures on a computer screen.
C. Making a capsaicin cream. D. Putting on virtual reality headsets.
34. What conclusion can be drawn from the trial?
A. Healthy people were less sensitive to VR than pain sufferers.
B. Capsaicin cream brought people more pain than electronic stimulus.
C. Still images helped to ease people's pain.
D. VR immersion was the key factor in pain reduction.
35. What does the last paragraph imply?
A. VR treatment can be applied in other medical fields.
B. The trial only has an effect on short-term pain patient.
C. The team feels confident about future VR treatment.
D. The researchers will work on the side effect of VR.
32-35 CADC
根据第二段“According to the researchers, the findings add to the growing evidence for the potential of VR technology to help patients with long-term pain. Beyond the distracting effect, they think VR may actually cause the body’s own inbuilt pain-fighting systems to start working.(研究人员表示,这一发现进一步证明了VR技术在帮助长期疼痛患者方面的潜力。除了这种分散注意力的效果,他们认为VR实际上可能会导致人体自身内置的止痛系统开始工作)”可推知,VR是通过让止痛系统发挥作用来帮助长期疼痛患者。故选C。
33.细节理解题。根据第四段“To test their theory, researchers applied a cream containing capsaicin—the chemical that makes your mouth bum-to 15 healthy volunteers. (为了验证他们的理论,研究人员对15名健康志愿者使用了一种含有辣椒素的乳霜——辣椒素是一种会让你的嘴巴变得不舒服的化学物质)”可知,在理论验证过程中的第一步是在皮肤上涂抹辣椒素霜。故选A。
34. 推理判断题。根据倒数第二段“The team found that ongoing pain was reduced following VR immersion, and that sensitivity to painful stimuli was also reduced. However, the same effect was not seen in people who looked at still images of the polar environment.(研究小组发现,沉浸VR后持续的疼痛减少了,对疼痛刺激的敏感性也降低了。然而,同样的效果在观看静止的极地环境图片的人身上没有看到)”可推知,VR沉浸感是减轻疼痛的关键因素。故选D。
35. 推理判断题。根据最后一段“They explain that while the findings made at the beginning are encouraging, the study is limited by the small number of healthy participants, without long-term pain. However, the researchers believe VR could hold a bright future to treat patients with long-term pain who have poor inbuilt pain fighting systems.(他们解释说,尽管开始时的发现令人鼓舞,但该研究受到健康参与者的限制,且没有长期痛苦。但是,研究人员认为,VR可以为治疗长期疼痛且内置止痛系统不佳的患者带来光明的前景)”可知研究人员认为VR可以为治疗长期疼痛且内置止痛系统不佳的患者带来光明的前景,由此可知本段内容表明该团队对未来VR治疗充满信心。故选C。

The Feel-Good Shoebox
Catherine sat on her bed with her chin in her hands. “Why aren't you getting ready for Grandma's birthday party?”asked Mother.
“I can't bake like Sylvia or knit like Anne,” Catherine grumbled. “They made good presents. All I made for her is an ugly card.” “It's a lovely card. And no one can be good at everything,” said Mother. She sat on the bed next to Catherine. “When I was your age, I felt sad when I couldn't do certain things. But one day Grandma showed me the shoebox game, and it made me feel a lot better.” Catherine frowned (皱眉). “How can a shoebox make me feel better?”“You'll see,” said Mother. She disappeared down the hall, then came back carrying a shoe box, a pencil, paper, and scissors.
Catherine watched as Mother cut several pieces of paper into squares. “Nôw, I want you to write down all the things you can do,” said Mother. “Like what?” asked Catherine. “Why not start with things you've learned in school? Give it some thought while I ice Grandma's birthday cake.”
Catherine sat for a while wrinkling (起皱纹) and unwrinkling her eyebrows.Slowly Catherine began to write and write. Before long she had written on every square of paper. She was so busy that she didn't hear Mother come into the room.“My goodness!"said Mother.“Do you think they'll all fit in the shoebox?”“I hope so,” said Catherine. “It was fun thinking of all the stuff I can do.”“And the next time you feel sad because you can't do something, your feel-good shoebox will remind you of how much you can do-just as mine did when I was a little girl,” said Mother,“Now let's finish getting dressed for Grandma's party.”

One possible version:
“Happy birthday!” yelled(欢呼) the children when they arrived at Grandma’s house. “we brought you cookies. We made them by myself.”said Sylvia. “wonderful”said Grandm.Meanwhile, Anne quietly took out the scarf she knitted for grandma. When grandma saw it, her face showed appreciation and said proudly, "my baby, you are such a handy girl. I like it very much.". Shrinking behind them, Cathrine looked nervously at the card in her hand and wondered if grandma would like it. At this time, grandma looked at Catherine kindly and said gently, "I'm curious what my Catherine has prepared for me?"
Then Catherine gave her card to Grandma. When grandma saw this card, she showed a big smile, " Wow, this is the most beautiful card I've ever seen." Grandma thanked the children again for their birthday gifts. They ate delicious cookies and spent a good night together. That night, when she lay in bed,Catherine thought about her feel-good shoebox and how it really did make her feel very, very good. She feels that no matter what difficulties she encounters in the future, she can face them bravely as long as there is feel good shoebox.
