阅读理解
A
You might think you’re in control of your schedule, but your body developed to follow a natural rhythm. Sticking closer to that routine can help keep you in wonderful shape.
·Drink coffee
Drinking coffee is best done early in the day. If you drink coffee later, it can reset your body’s clock and prevent sleep. If you’re sure you can take a shot of espresso (浓咖啡) at 8 pm and be sleeping by 10 pm, try skipping the caffeine for a few weeks to see what a night of truly good rest feels like.
·Eat
It’s best to eat your biggest meal early, contrary to a typical American day. Insulin (胰岛素) — the hormone (激素) that regulates metabolism (新陈代谢) — peaks in the first half of the day, then steadily drops. So your blood sugar is less likely to skyrocket after a big breakfast than after a comparable dinner.
·Sleep
Around 8 pm or 9 pm, our bodies start to cool down, and we sleep better when we have a low core body temperature. But how much shut-eye is ideal? Studies show that those who get six and a half to eight hours are less likely to die early. Eight hours seems to be perfect.
·Exercise
Some people swear by early-morning jogs. But muscle tone is highest around 5 pm Even professionals get a boost: West Coast NFL teams won more often and by a higher margin (差数) in matches after 8 pm on the East Coast. Still on Pacific time, their body were primed to play.
·Be creative
The evolution of language, religion, and philosophy all started with late-night talks—and research suggests there is still a different cast to our night thinking. So save that short story you’ve been meaning to write for a dark and restless night.
·Do math
Scientists think we reach maximum alertness between 10 am and 2 pm, with a peak around noon. For the first few hours after we wake, organs with more basic functions take priority. Once they’re booted up, our brains have a chance to hog (占为己有) some more energy.
1. The author suggests people who drink coffee late in the day___________.
A. go to bed without drinking coffee
B. break their habit and go to bed early
C. go to bed two hours after drinking coffee
D. stick to their habit to have a truly good sleep
2. What can be learned from the third paragraph?
A. Americans usually have their biggest meal in the morning.
B. Insulin plays an important role in controlling our blood sugar.
C. The higher your insulin level is, the higher your blood sugar level is.
D. People’s blood sugar level is normally higher in the morning than in the afternoon.
3. Joanna is a promising young writer whose microblog enjoys one million followers. What is probably the best time for her to write inspiring stories for her fans?
A. 8 am.    B. 11 pm. C. 6 pm.        D. 10 am.

Twenty years ago, I became involved in pet therapy (治疗) work. As digging deeper into the job, I had an urge to be a recorder of their daily work to let more and more people know their efforts and contributions. After all, they could not say our languages. It was when I got familiar with the work that I got my golden retriever puppy (金毛寻回犬), whom I named Angel. As she matured and went through obedience training, I realized that she would be a good partner.
Angel is ten now and still works every week. As a rule, she visits two hospitals, a day care for the elderly, and our library’s PAWS for Reading program. Angel has also helped out at a children’s special-needs camp. She is so popular that everywhere we go people recognize her, especially the kids she has worked with.
We have seen some very special things through our pet therapy work. I brought Angel to our local hospital to visit a woman who was completely paralyzed (瘫痪的) on her right side from a stroke. One day, my husband, Jack asked her if she wanted to give Angel a treat. She nodded and gently took the treat, raised her right hand and started petting Angel. Her friend was in the room and said, “She hasn’t been able to move that hand since she had her stroke!”
Somehow it seems appropriate that when Angel visits the hospital, she also performs tricks for the patients with her paws. The best one is when she crouches on the floor and crosses her paws. She stays still and doesn’t move until Jack says “Best wishes”. It’s the best wishes for all the people Angel meets as well as for her.
4. Why does the author want to be a recorder?
A. Pets cannot record themselves.        B. Pets should be highly praised.
C. Pets’ labor should be made aware of.        D. Pets daily work is important.
5. How is Angel’s work?
A. Busy but rewarding.        B. Interesting but tiring.
C. Funny and amusing.        D. Important and demanding.
6. What did Angel do for the paralyzed woman?
A. She cured her disease.        B. She visited her at times.
C. She gave her best wishes.        D. She played tricks on her.
7. What is the best title for the passage?
A. A loyal dog.        B. Selfless love.
C. A silent angel.        D. Great devotion.

When the COVID-19 hit and supermarket shelves were empty, Chris Hall and Stefanny Lowey decided they no longer wanted to rely on others for food. The couple, who live on Pender Island in British Columbia, Canada, decided to start a year-long challenge where they wouldn't buy a single thing to eat. Instead they would grow, raise or catch everything—right down to sugar, salt and flour. Now, five months in, they say the challenge has changed their lives.
Chris, 38, said, “It has always been something that we have wanted to do. We have had a garden and grown vegetables for a long time already. When the COVID-19 hit, it gave us that extra push that we needed to do it. We were both out of work when we started, and with the reality check of grocery stores running out of items, it gave us even more motivation to see if we could look after ourselves.”
The pair spent the months before building a house for chickens, ducks and turkey as well as studying as much as possible to figure out where they would get all the things they needed. Chris adds, “We had to learn so many new things like how to grow mushrooms, process our Stevia plants, and harvest salt from the ocean. We spent a lot of time reading and studying online to figure out all the things we were going to need to do.”
Now after five months, they both feel its been going well but Chris admits the first few weeks were difficult. “The first three weeks were very challenging as our bodies adjusted to cutting out coffee, wine and sugar all on the same day,” he says. “After three weeks our energy levels balanced out and our wishes reduced and now we feel great.” Now February has ended. As they come through winter, they feel positive about continuing with this way of living, with their challenge officially ending in August.
12.Why did the pair decide to produce foods on their own?
