In 2015,  Chennai was destroyed by one of the worst floods in over a century,  leaving thousands without food,  water and supplies. During the flood,  many heroes arose,  one of whom was Santosh,  a young man who owned a takeout restaurant in Chennai.
When the first flood hit in November,  he got a call from a company called Naga Rava. The company asked him to prepare 5, 000 packets of food and give them to the flood victims. He,  with his partners,  took the order,  cooked for 14 hours and delivered(递送) them. But that night,  as they sat together discussing the event of the day,  they actually felt ashamed(羞愧). “Here was a man not even from Chennai and he was going out of his way to help the affected people. We,  while living here,  had not really done anything ourselves for our own people, ” said Santosh later.
He then began the groundwork for a collection to help cook more dishes. Little did he know that the November flood was just the beginning,  and the real show was about to begin. The December flood affected them all. His own house got flooded and his family was trapped on the second floor. They lost phone connection and electricity. In spite of this,  Santosh went back out into the flood,  creating a kitchen and preparing food all by himself for the victims.
He did not sleep for four days,  taking a one-hour break every day as he kept on cooking. As word got out about this man’s effort,  others stepped out to join him. From children to the elderly,  strangers came to help him in cooking,  packing and transporting food. Up to 300 volunteers worked together to make it all happen. By the time the fourth day finally came to an end,  Santosh and his team had prepared 170, 000 food boxes and delivered them to people in need.

We already know the fastest,  least expensive way to slow down climate change—use less energy. With a little effort,  and not much money,  most of us could reduce our energy diets by 25 percent or more—doing the Earth a favor while also helping our wallets.
Not long ago,  my wife,  PJ,  and I tried a new diet—not to lose a little weight but to answer an annoying question about climate change. Scientists have reported recently that the world is heating up even faster than predicted only a few years ago,  and that the consequences could be severe if we don’t keep reducing emission(排放) of carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gases that are trapping heat in our atmosphere.
We decided to try an experiment. For one month we recorded our personal emission of CO2. We wanted to see how much we could cut back,  so we went on a strict diet. The average US household produces about 150 pounds of CO2 a day by doing common things like turning on air-conditioning or driving cars. That’s more than twice the European average and almost five times the global average,  mostly because Americans drive more and have bigger houses. But how much should we try to reduce?
For an answer,  I checked with Tim Flannery,  author of The Weather Makers:  How Man Is Changing the Climate and What It Means for Life on Earth. In his book,  he had challenged readers to make deep cuts in personal emission to keep the world from reaching extremely important tipping points,  such as the melting(融化) of the ice sheets in Greenland or West Antarctica. “To stay below that point,  we need to reduce CO2 emission by 80 percent, ”he said.
Good advice,  I thought. I’d opened our bedroom windows to let the wind in. We’d gotten so used to keeping our air-conditioning going around the clock. I’d almost forgotten the windows even opened. We should not let this happen again. It’s time for us to change our habits if necessary.
5. Why did the author and his wife try a new diet?
A. To take special kinds of food.
B. To respond to climate change.
C. To lose weight.
D. To improve their health.
6. What do the underlined words “tipping points” most probably refer to?
A. Freezing points.             B. Burning points.
C. Melting points.                                 D. Boiling points.
7. According to the passage,  Which of the following is true about Tim Flannery?
A. He made deep cuts in his personal emission of CO2.
B. He wrote a book about climate change.
C. He succeeded in reducing CO2 emission by 80 percent.
D. He was an author popular among readers.
8. Which of the following would be the best title for this passage?
A. Saving Energy Starts at Home
B. Changing Our Habits Begins at Work
C. Changing Climate Sounds Reasonable
D. Reducing Emission of CO2 Proves Difficult

Ways to Get Your Kids into Nature
Being in nature for kids has tremendous health benefits. There are many ways you can incorporate nature into your children’s lives,  even if you live in the city.
Inspire curiosity by being curious yourself. A parent’s excitement can be spread to the children,  and when you show respect for nature,  your children follow suit. 1 . “I don’t know!  Let’s find out together. ” is a wonderful way to get the ball rolling. Be open to a mutual adventure and allow your curious inner child to come out while you explore nature with your children.
2 .  If you have to carpool(拼车) in the morning,  turn off the devices instead and encourage your children to look out of the window. The early morning fall skies are beautiful with color and migrating birds. After all,  even views of nature from the car window are calming and beneficial.
Stop thinking about nature time as leisure time. Time in nature is an essential investment in your children’s health and well-being. If you view nature time as essential to good health,  you will be more likely to engage in it. 3 ,  nurturing creativity and wonder is part of your responsibility as parents.
Look at the stars. Visit your local observatory,  and then drive out of the city some morning or evening for your own stargazing(天体观察) with a blanket and telescope. Observing the stars offers a deeper and wider understanding of the universe. 4 .
Plant a small garden. 5 .  Bean and pea plants grow quickly and can be eaten when mature,  so teach your children about food and the wonder of growth.
A. Limit electronic devices while driving
B. Encourage questions you don’t know the answers to
C. If you want to raise your healthy,  well-balanced children
D. If you have the space,  help your children plant a few vegetables
E. It will teach teamwork,  pride in the community,  and family togetherness
F. If your child is interested,  encourage him to get involved in the community
G. Allow yourself to think about it,  and talk to your children about that wonder
