One Sunday, Nicholas, a teenager, went skiing at Sugarloaf Mountain in Maine. In the early afternoon, when he was planning to go home, a fierce snowstorm swept into the area. Unable to see far, he accidentally turned off the path. Before he knew it, Nicholas was lost, all alone! He didn't have food, water, a phone, or other supplies. He was getting colder by the minute.
Nicholas had no idea where he was. He tried not to panic. He thought about all the survival shows he had watched on TV. It was time to put the tips he had learned to use.
He decided to stop skiing. There was a better chance of someone finding him if he stayed put. The first thing he did was to find shelter from the freezing wind and snow. If he didn't, his body temperature would get very low, which could quickly kill him. Using his skis, Nicholas built a snow cave. He gathered a huge mass of snow and dug out a hole in the middle. Then he piled branches on top of himself, like a blanket, to stay as warm as he could.
By that evening, Nicholas was really hungry. He ate snow and drank water from a nearby stream so that his body wouldn't lose too much water. Not knowing how much longer he could last, Nicholas did the only thing he could—he huddled (蜷缩) in his cave and slept.
The next day, Nicholas went out to look for help, but he couldn't find anyone. He followed his tracks and returned to the snow cave, because without shelter, he could die that night. On Tuesday, Nicholas went out again to find help. He had walked for about a mile when a volunteer searcher found him. Having been stuck in the snow for two days, Nicholas was saved.
Nicholas might not have survived this snowstorm had it not been for TV. He had often watched Grylls' survival show Man vs. Wild. That's where he learned the tips that saved his life. When Grylls heard about Nicholas' amazing deeds, he was super impressed that Nicholas had made it since he knew better than anyone how hard Nicholas had to work to stay alive.
24.What caused Nicholas to get lost at the mountain?
A.Having no guides to help.
B.Forgetting the way back.
C.Terrible weather.
D.Poor eyesight.
25.How did Nicholas keep himself warm?
A.He built a snow cave.
B.He found a shelter.
C.He kept on skiing.
D.He made a fire.
26.Why was Grylls' show mentioned?
A.It was Nicholas' favorite TV program.
B.It taught Nicholas useful knowledge.
C.Nicholas shared his story on the show.
D.Grylls asked Nicholas to make a TV interview.
27.Which of the following may best describe Nicholas?
A.Calm and brave.
B.Responsible and curious.
C.Lucky and smart.
D.Confident and outgoing.

There are many ways to travel within a city. We can walk, cycle, or take a bus. But no matter which way we travel, we have to stick to the route (线路) the city planners laid down for us.
Parkour practitioners (跑酷练习者), however, see the city in a completely different way. To them, there are no fixed routes. There are no walls and no stairs—since they jump, climb, roll and crawl to move across, through, over and under anything that they find in their path. The city is their playground.
The International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) has noticed that this activity is drawing more and more people to it—there are 100,000 people taking part in parkour today in the UK alone, according to the Guardian—and how it is helpful for people to be much stronger: It trains coordination and balance. So the organization is thinking about recognizing parkour as a new sport and adding it to the Olympics by 2024.
But parkour practitioners themselves don't seem to be happy with the idea. They see parkour as “a lifestyle”, wrote the website Next Sport Star. “It's a competition against the conditions rather than just a sport.”
Indeed, many do parkour just to “escape the daily routine and experience the city in different ways”, wrote reporter Oli Mould on The Conversation. They see parkour as a way to express themselves through relaxing moves and creative routes while freeing themselves from the pressure.
It's great that the FIG wants to develop new sport and stay close to a new cultural form. But it would be greater if they knew that not everything in life is a competition.
28.How do the parkour practitioners do parkour?
A.They move on as they wish.
B.They plan the way themselves.
C.They run faster than others.
D.They stick to certain routes.
29.Why does the FIG want to add parkour to the Olympics?
A.It's a special way of life.
B.It draws their attention.
CIt's good for people to keep healthy.
D.It needs some rules and instructions.
30.What is the author's idea on parkour?
A.It is more formal than other sports.
B.It helps people to be creative.
C.It's worth adding to the sporting event.
D.It calls on people to work as a team.
31.What is the best title for the passage?
A.A New Sports Competition
B.Parkour Practitioners
C.Training in a Different Way
D.Making the City Their Own

What is success? I am not going to try to explain success. I think a precise meaning is impossible! Is it winning a Gold Medal at the Olympic Games or winning Wimbledon, or being awarded a Nobel Prize? What else? I believe personal success could be anything at all—it does not have to involve public recognition. Who is more successful? A millionaire who is unhappy, or an unnoticed person, who has led a simple, quiet, sincere and happy life? The simplest definition of success, I think, is “to set out to do something and to succeed in doing it”
The first step on the road to success starts with belief. Believe you can succeed and you will. Achieving success in whatever endeavor (努力) you choose may be the goal of life; because it gives you freedom from worry. Could that be?
Success means different things to every one of us. Some people believe it is measured in financial term; others believe it is helping others rather than helping themselves. However, most people are motivated to a great extend by public recognition. How many people are really happy? How many people are really doing what they want to with their lives? Incidentally, the ability to imagine makes us different from animals.
Most important of all, I believe success is a matter of personal growth. If every day you are developing or growing just a millimeter, I believe one is successful. Just being a slightly better person each day for me is success. I've got a very long way to go then!
Finally, always remember success is a process and is not simply a matter of arriving at a destination. It's the journey that really matters. Success is what you become in the often very difficult and dangerous journey down the river of life.
32.What is personal success according to the author?
A.Winning public recognition.
B.Being an unhappy millionaire.
C.Something impossible to define simply.
D.Succeeding in doing what you want.
33.Which plays an important role in your success?
A.Intelligence.         B.Confidence.
C.Wealth.          D.Kindness.
34.What is the difference between animals and human beings according to the passage?
A.Belief.          B.Freedom.
C.Imagination.          D.Success.
35.What can be the best title for the passage?
A.What Is Success
B.No True Success
C.How to Be Successful
D.Success Is Reaching a Destination

Many parents don't allow or help their children to learn to swim. 36. A child who has learned to swim has the confidence to attend activities about water, like parties. More importantly, the child is safer in and around water. Here are some tips for you to help your child learn to swim.
Introduce your child to water early in life. Children who become familiar with water in the early days are less likely to be afraid of water later. 37. You can build a private pool for your child or allow your child to use a public pool. Most public pools have special pools for the youngest children.
For older children who want to learn to swim but have a fear of water, introduce them to water gradually. Be sure not to avoid the pool when the water is cold and uncomfortable because you want the experience to be pleasant. What if your child only wants to hang his feet in water at first? 38.
Once your child has become comfortable with water, he will be able to begin the basics. 39. They'll be followed by learning how to float (浮起来), kick and so on. If you find it challenging to teach your child to swim, consider asking a private instructor to work with him.
40. Never allow a child who can't swim into the water alone and never leave a child unobserved in the water. Follow all pool and water safety recommendations at all times. And before swimming, check the possible dangers in the pools.
A.First a child must learn proper breathing skills.
B.It's also useful for adults to practice swimming.
C.When building it, you should avoid a deep pool.
D.So creating an environment with water is necessary.
E.But the ability to swim can be important for children.

Diane Ray was completely selfcentred and very spoilt (溺爱的). Her parents gave her everything that she wanted, knowing that she would throw a temper tantrum (发脾气) if they did not satisfy her desire. She would scream (尖叫) and lie on the floor drumming her heels. Finally her parents always gave in.
That was why she was alone on the beach, wearing an expensive swimsuit. It had taken a big tantrum to get her parents to buy it for her. They were back at the beachhouse, recovering from the tantrum she had thrown when they told her that it was too dangerous to go diving alone. Dangerous? she had said. “You just don't want me to have fun. I'm going and if you try to stop me, I'll scream.”
What are you doing? a voice asked. Diane jumped and looked around. She did not know that the man was there until he spoke.
I'm going to dive, she answered coldly.
You shouldn't swim today, the man advised. There is a storm (风暴) coming up.
You should mind your own business! Diane replied and walked into the gentle waves.
If you go out there you'll be sorry, the man called after her. But she did not want to reply.
Diane slipped into the water and dived happily until white waves began rolling in and it became harder to swim against the current (水流). Sea water hit against her face, making it difficult to breathe. Oh, why did I not listen to the advice?
