While I was growing up, I often heard my teachers say, Oh, Tina is gifted in algebra.” While watching the Olympics, my parents would say, “These gymnasts are born with such ability.” Statements like these made me believe people were born with certain talents and if they didn't have a particular one at birth, then they never would. Therefore, I rarely focused on algebra. Nobody told me that if you keep trying and trying, one day a difficult task will seem easy.
Actually, I learnt this from my young daughter, Samaya. One day, I was finishing some paperwork and I said, “Oh no, how could I have made that mistake!” Samaya instantly said, “Mum, don't worry. Mistakes make your brain grow bigger.”
Actually, we all need to be reminded that mistakes or failures are just fine and that they are a huge part of growth and success. However, the regular belief is the opposite. We must correct this with our children. We must encourage them to make mistakes because that means they are trying out new ideas.
Billionaire Sara Blakely, founder of the shapewear business Spanx, has seen many failures. She made a living by selling fax machines for seven years. Knocking on many doors and making a lot of mistakes was a journey she calls educational. Sara Blakely owes her risk-taking skills to the weekend talk she had with her father.
As a child, her father would ask her the same question every weekend. "What did you fail at this week, Sara?" He did not care how high her scores were. He wanted to know what she had tried but failed at. When she told him about her failures and mistakes, he would give her a high five. He was reprogramming her mind to believe that mistakes and failures are fine.
So go ahead and ask yourself and your children, “What did we fail at this week?”
24. What discouraged the author from efforts in algebra?
A. She wasn't interested in it.        B. She thought she was not gifted.
C. She thought it was useless.        D. She was not allowed to learn it.
25. What does the underlined word “this” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A. Keep trying is necessary.        B. Failure is a path to success.
C. Mistakes are not acceptable.        D. Encouragement is significant.
26. Why did Sara's father keep asking her the same question?
A. To rebuild her mindset.        B. To keep her from failures.
C. To know what she hadn't tried.        D. To prevent her getting high scores.
27. What would be the best title for the text?
A. A Secret to Success        B. A Method of Education
C. The Magic of Mistakes        D. The Power of a Fixed Mindset
C
"I’ll be there in a few minutes. I'm playing a game with a friend, a guy named Scuzbll," my 15-year-old son shouted from his room."Oh, what is Scuzzball's real name?"I asked."I have no idea," he said."Where is he from?"I continued. He responded, "I think somewhere in Canada. Oh, wait, it doesn't even matter because Scuzball just left the game and he has been replaced with a robot."
"Your friend is replaced by artificial intelligence?""It doesn't matter, Dad. It happens all the time! The game continues."My son doesn't mind playing with a person or a robot, which is typical of gamers these days. I wonder whether the face-to-face experience of friendship that I grew up with will be lost by our children.
Aristotle, a great thinker and educator, has pointed out that shallow friendship is easily formed but also easily abandoned because such bonds are fragile. Deep friendship, by contrast, is when you care for your friend for his sake, not for any benefit you can get. This is selfless friendship. You can have only a couple of these friends because they require lots of time and effort. You must make sacrifices for each other.
Presence in friendship requires "being with" and "doing for". Perhaps the most defining feature of deep friendship is "doing for", as my friend has my back in trouble or brings me soup when I'm sick. Only strong bonds have the power to motivate real sacrifices. But it is unclear why online "friends" would bother to do the hard work of friendship. When I asked my students whether they had people in their lives who would bring them soup when they were sick, they laughed at my Stone Age question and said they'd just order soup online.
Digital life fills and absorbs waking life time so that people do not join in example case of friendship, like sports, collective arts, free range childhoods, etc. In this way, digital lie produces false friendships.
28. How does the author lead in the topic of the text?
A. By quoting mottos.
B. By presenting a conversation.
C. By introducing a game.
D. By showing robots' storage data.
29. What does the author mainly explain in paragraph 3?
A. Selfish friendship.        B. Selfless sacrifices in life.
C. The formation of shallow friendship.        D. The meaning of deep friendship.
30. What does the author want to tell his students in paragraph 4?
A. Strong bonds are formed easily.        B. Ordering food online is convenient.
C. Robots will have our back in trouble.        D. Virtual friends won't make real sacrifices.
31. What is the text mainly about?
A. Digitalized friendship.        B. The benefits of digital life.
C. Face-to-face communication.        D. The sacrifices of online friends.

Studies have shown most people fail to realise how much time they spend on their smartphones each day.
Frank and Amelia’s family were put to a test, using a free app called “Moment-Screen Time Tracker”. The Vascellaros—Frank, Amelia, 14-year-old twins Frankie and Joe, and 17-year-old Sam—all said they did not really know they were spending so much time on their phones each day.
“Honestly, I don’t feel like I’m on my phone a lot,” Amelia Vascellaro said. Amelia was on her phone far less often than Frank, according to the app. While Amelia spent about an hour per day on the phone, Frank spent closer to four hours on his phone, which came as a shock to him. The children’s times varied but they often spent more than a couple of hours on the phone as well.
Minneapolis-based Dr. Kirsten Lind Seal sees phone usage come up lot among families. Lind Seal said many family members’ phone use has become problematic.
“If we hear more than once, ‘Do you have to be on your phone right now? Can you please put your phone down? Did you hear what I said?’ it may be a sign that it is negatively influencing our family relationships and our daily lives,” she said.
Lind Seal said actually paying attention to how much time one spends on the phone is a good first step in deciding when to put it down.
She asks parents to encourage more face-to-face communication for teens and young adults as they continue developing their social and emotional skills. “What we find is that we are really losing out on empathy—the ability to understand other people’s feelings and problems—when we spend a lot of time on our smartphones to communicate with other people,” she said.
32. How did the Vascellaros feel about the test results?
A. Satisfied.        B. Doubtful.        C. Uninterested.        D. Surprised.
33. Why did Lind Seal mention the three questions in Paragraph 5?
A. To encourage people to live simple life.        B. To ask people if they use phones too much.
C. To explain the signs of problematic phone use.        D. To show the importance of close relationships.
34. What is the text mainly about?
A. Too much use of smartphones.        B. The influence of apps on teens.
C. Children’s safety on the Internet.        D. Problems among family members.
35. From which is the text probably taken?
A. A textbook.        B. A journal        C. A magazine        D. A guidebook

Forgiveness
To forgive is a virtue, but no one has ever said it is easy. When someone has deeply hurt you, it can be extremely difficult to let go of your hate. However, forgiveness is possible, and it can be surprisingly beneficial to your physical and mental health. People who forgive show less sadness, anger and stress and more hopefulness, according to a recent research.
___36___ Try the following steps
Calm yourself. ___37___ You can take a couple of breaths and think of something that gives you pleasure: a beautiful scene in nature, or someone you love.
Don’t wait for an apology. Many times the person who hurt you does not intend to apologize. They may have wanted to hurt you or they just don’t see things the same way. ___38___  Keep in mind that forgiveness does not necessarily mean becoming friends again with the person who upset you.
Take the control away from your offender (冒犯者). Rethinking about your hurt gives power to the person who caused you pain. Instead of focusing on your wounded feelings, learn to look for the love, beauty and kindness around you.
___39___ If you understand your offender, you may realize that he or she was acting out of unawareness, fear, and even love. You may want to write a letter to yourself from your offender’s point of view.
Don’t forget to forgive yourself. ___40___  But it can rob you of your selfconfidence if you don’t do it.
A. Why should you forgive?
B. How should you start to forgive?
C. Recognize the benefits of forgiveness.
D. Try to see things from your offender’s angle.
E. For some people, forgiving themselves is the biggest challenge.
F. To make your anger die away, try a simple stressmanagement technique.
G. If you wait for people to apologize, you could be waiting an awfully long time.
