In 1947 a group of famous people from the art world decided to hold an international festival of music, dance and theatre in Edinburgh. The idea was to reunite Europe after World War Ⅱ.
It quickly attracted famous names such as Alec Guinness, Richard Burton, Dame Margot Fonteyn and Marlene Dietrich as well as the big symphony orchestras It became a fixed event every August and now attracts about 400,000 people yearly.
At the same time, the Edinburgh Festival Fringe (the Fringe) appeared as a challenge to the official festival. Eight theatre groups turned up uninvited in 1947, believing that everyone should have the right to perform, and they did so in a public house that had been disused for years.
Soon, groups of students firstly from The University of Edinburgh, and later from the universities of Oxford and Cambridge, Durham and Birmingham were making the journey to the Scottish capital each summer to perform theatre by littleknown writers of plays in small halls.
Today the Fringe, once less recognized, has far outgrown the festival with around 1,500 performances of music, dance and theatre on every one of the 21 days it lasts. And yet as early as 1959, with only 19 theatre groups performing, some said it was getting too big.
A paid administrator (管理人员) was first employed only in 1971, and today there are eight administrators working all year round and the number rises to 150 during August itself. In 2004 there were 200 places housing 1,695 shows by over 600 different groups from 50 different countries. More than 1.25 million tickets were sold.

Once a circle missed a wedge (楔子). The circle wanted to be whole, so it went around looking for its missing piece. But because it was incomplete and therefore could roll only very slowly, it admired the flowers along the way. It chatted with worms. It enjoyed the sunshine. Finally it found a piece that fit perfectly. It was so happy. Now that it was a perfect circle, it could roll very fast, too fast to notice flowers or talk to the worms. When it realized how different the world seemed when it rolled so quickly, it stopped, left its found piece by the side of the road and rolled slowly away.
In some strange sense we are more whole when we are missing something. The man who has everything is in some ways a poor man. He will never know what it feels like to yearn, to hope, to nourish (滋润) his soul with the dream of something better. He will never know the experience of having someone who loves him give him something he has always wanted or never had.
There is wholeness about the person who has come to terms with his limitations, who has been brave enough to let go of his unrealistic dreams and does not feel like a failure for doing so. There is wholeness about the man or woman who has learned that he or she is strong enough to go through a tragedy (悲剧) and survive — he or she can lose someone and still feel like a complete person.
Life is more like a baseball season, when even the best team loses one third of its games and even the worst team has its days of brilliance. Our goal is to win more games than we lose. When we accept that imperfection is part of being human, and when we can continue rolling through life and appreciate it, we will have achieved wholeness that others can only long for.
28.Which may be an example of being whole?
A.A person has everything.

29. How is a baseball season similar to life?
A.Easy come, easy go.
B.Failure is the mother of success.
C.Energy and persistence conquer all things.
D.Some battles you win and some battles you lose.
根据最后一段中的“Life is more like a baseball season, when even the best team loses one third of its games and even the worst team has its days of brilliance. Our goal is to win more games than we lose.”
30.How does the author clarify his idea?
A.Mainly by comparing.
B.Mainly by reasoning.
C.Mainly by informing.
D.Mainly by arguing.
故选A。
31.What can be the best title for the passage?
A.Pursue Perfection in Life
B.Be Whole in Life
C.Life Without Mistakes Is Whole
D.No Pains, No Gains
D
Maggie, a girl of thirteen years old, lived on the west coast of the United States. She had never experienced an earthquake before; she only prepared for it. As long as she could remember, preparing for an earthquake was common at her school. Her family had made plans as well in case of a natural disaster.
One day, Maggie arrived home from school at the usual time. However, it was not the same as usual. She was home alone. Her mom would be driving home on the busy freeway and her dad was to arrive at the airport. He was coming home from a twoweek business trip.
After finishing her homework, Maggie felt a little hungry, so she went to the kitchen to find something to eat. Just then she felt a shake, then the violent shaking. Maggie quickly ran under the large table in the dining room. The sounds of breaking glass and the crashing of many things were deafening,__and Maggie hugged herself in fear.
After what seemed like a very long time, the earthquake appeared to be over. Maggie could hear the sound of water rushing below her in the basement. And there was the smell of natural gas in the air. Maggie knew where the main water valve (阀门) was and how to turn it off. Dad had ever shown her before.
Slowly and carefully she came out from under the table. The once tidy home was then almost unrecognizable. Walls had fallen down and many things in the room were in a mess. As Maggie approached the open basement door, she could see the steps. Carefully she made her way down into the dark basement.
While placing her feet firmly on the floor, Maggie felt a sudden pain as a large wood hit her head and shoulder. She fell unconscious onto a pile of boxes. An hour later, she woke up and found her parents beside her. She was happy that she was still alive!

A.Very loud. B.Quite familiar.
C.Very distant. D.Quite strange.

We all know a wagging tail means a dog is friendly, right? Not necessarily. Dogs say lots of things with their tails—and not all of them are nice. A dog who is wagging its tail might be happy, interested, or confident. 36.________ In this section, we'll tell you how to understand a dog's body language.

It might not be ready to welcome you. 37.________ It's still deciding whether you are a friend or not. The same is true of a dog whose tail is wagging slowly.
When a dog hears or sees something new or exciting, its ears will go up or forward. 38.________ Its ears can also be pointed in different directions, allowing the dog to quickly figure out where a sound is coming from.
Watch your dog's facial expressions to learn more about how it's feeling. You might even catch it smiling. 39.________ But dogs probably smile for the same reason we do. They want to let others know they don't mean any harm.
Body language is one thing. 40.________ They are full of meaningful messages for dog owners.

Peter woke up early in the morning. He went downstairs in a hurry and started to have his breakfast as quickly as possible.
“Why are you in such a hurry, early bird?” Mum asked him. “We will have an English spelling test today, Mum,” Peter said. “Mr White promised to offer prizes to those who get 100 scores. I've been studying the word list since last week. Although the words are difficult, I am well prepared for them.”
Peter reviewed the spelling of each word once more carefully when Dad drove him to school. At last, it was time for the students to have a test. “Responsibility,” Mr White started. Peter wrote it on his test paper quickly and confidently.
“The second word: contribution,” Mr White said.
“So easy,” Peter thought. He quickly wrote the word down.
Thirty words later, the test papers were collected by Mr White. “I am to mark your papers now,” he told the class. After marking the test papers, Mr White said, “three of you won a prize__today for excellent test scores. Peter, David and Mary got 100 percent on the spelling test!”
Mr White praised them. Meanwhile, he gave the three students each a dictionary. Peter's was an EnglishChinese dictionary—the one he liked best. Peter was so excited that he held it high when his classmates cheered. “This is my happiest moment,” Peter thought.
After Mr White gave the test paper back, Peter had a look at the words, feeling proud of his spelling. All of a sudden, the word “contribution” confused him. It didn't seem right. Peter began to compare them after taking out the word list. “Contribusion,” he whispered. He had spelled it wrong.
“What am I to do?” Peter said to himself. “I expect my classmates to think I'm a master in spelling. If I tell Mr White one of my spelling words is wrong, I'll have to give my prize back, or I will become an example for telling a lie.”
Staring at the red sign “100%” which was written at his test paper, Peter was lost in thought. After a while, he remembered a lesson Mum used to teach him, “We ought to be an honest person.”

One possible version:
Slowly, Peter raised his hand. “Mr White, I didn't get 100 percent on the test. I missed a word.” He stood up and handed his teacher the dictionary he liked best and his test paper. “I spelled contribution with ‘si’ instead of ‘ti’. Peter could feel his classmates looking at him with surprise as he walked back to his desk. Mr White held up Peter's test paper. “Class,” he said, “Peter did something even more important than spelling every word correctly on a test.” Mr White smiled at Peter. “He taught us all a lesson on being honest.”
Peter looked around and found many of his classmates were smiling at him. “Peter, I want you to have this dictionary because you set a good example for all of us.” Mr White said. Peter took the dictionary from his teacher and expressed his thanks to Mr White. Meanwhile, he couldn't wait to show it to Mum and tell her one of his best days ever.
