(Text 1)
M:Those boots look good on you. How do they feel?
W:They're a bit tight across the toes. Maybe I need a different size.
M:Well, the length is fine and the leather is soft, but you may need something wider.
(Text 2)
M:Have you got any plans for New Year's Day?
W:I've been invited to my friend's house.
(Text 3)
W:I don't know why this restaurant is so busy. The food isn't very good and the prices are too high.
M:Many famous people come here, so everyone wants to come too.
W:I would rather have good food and low prices.
M:I can't agree more.
(Text 4)
M:How many cups of coffee have you had today? I've counted four.
W:Actually, I had two right when I woke up. After I began to work, I had three.
M:But it's not even noon!
(Text 5)
M:What floor would you like me to press
W:Thirty-six, please.
M:We're on the same floor. I'm in the Williams Company.
W:Me too. I'm new here.
(Text 6)
W:Good morning, John. You're up early.
M:Yeah, I just did some exercise in the park. It was really good. I'm going to do it every morning. In that way, I don't need the gym any more. It will save me lots of money.
W:That's good. So are you ready for the chemistry test tomorrow?
M:Almost. I still have a bit more work to do. I'm going to the library now.
W:I'll go down with you.
(Text 7)
W:Henry, you're learning to drive, aren't you?
M:Yes. I went to the Far Driving School near my home. I've had ten lessons already and each one is fourteen pounds.
W:I see. And is the teacher's car new?
M:Yes, and it's not a big car, so parking is easy.
W:When are you going to take your driving test?
M:I failed it last week.
W:Did you hit something or...
M:The traffic lights were red but I didn't see them and I couldn't stop in time.
W:Never mind. You can take the test again. Tell me about your teacher. Is he friendly?
M:He's OK. His name is Jack. He's quite young and nice to talk to, but my father will give me my next lessons. He's cheaper.
(Text 8)
W:What is that, Mike?
M:Don't you know? It's a tiny parrot. It's my favorite pet.
W:Really? Is it a pet? How interesting!
M:Do you also have any pets?
W:Not right now, but my dad will get a pet for me for my birthday.
M:What kind of pet do you want?
W:I like dogs. They are very loyal.
M:Yes, but they also mean a lot of work. How about cats? They don't take much work. Cats are the most popular pets in the States.
W:Cats? Well, I'll think about it.
(Text 9)
M:Today we are honoured to have Dr. Nancy with us. Doctor, thanks for coming on our show.
W:It's my pleasure.
M:Now, can we start with the question What is creativity
W:Well, creativity can be viewed as a process, which usually starts with a person who's trying to find a better way of doing a task and comes up with a solution.
M:Hmm, I see. Do you think the ability to be creative is inborn or not?
W:Well, no one knows yet.
M:Does creativity only appear in great people?
W:Certainly not. Creativity can also be found in daily tasks such as cooking or gardening.
M:Oh, really? Dr. Nancy, can you describe to us what the actual creative process is?
W:Actually, many great artists describe it as a dreamlike state during which ideas just come to them in a flash.
M:What is going on in the brain during that flash?
W:No one knows for sure, but researchers suggest that part of the brain becomes very active, linking up with ideas or thoughts in previous unknown ways.
M:I see. Thank you very much, Dr. Nancy.
(Text 10)
M:Okay, it's my turn. I'm Aaron. Here is something about me. I'm the type of person who tries to fix things. If I see something wrong, I will try to make it right. It drives me crazy when I see a problem and no one is doing anything about it. It's better to fix the problem right away. I think this is a good quality to have. I just started a new job, and my boss seems really pleased with my work so far. Some people just accept a problem. But it doesn't have to be that way. It always feels satisfying when I can solve something.

At  thirteen, I was diagnosed (诊断) with a kind of attention disorder. It made school difficult for me. When everyone else in the class was focusing on tasks, I could not.
In my first literature class, Mrs Smith asked us to read a story and then write on it, all within 45 minutes. I raised my hand right away and said, “Mrs Smith, you see, the doctor said I have attention problems. I might not be able to do it. ”
She glanced at me through her glasses, “You are not different from your classmates, young man.”
I tried, but I didn't finish the reading when the bell rang. I had to take it home.
In the quietness of my bedroom, the story suddenly all became clear to me. It was about a blind person, Louis Braille. He lived in a time when the blind couldn't get much education. But Louis didn't give up. Instead, he invented a reading system of raised dots (点), which opened up a whole new world of knowledge to the blind.
Wasn't I the “blind” in my class, being made to learn like the “sighted” students? My thoughts spilt out (涌出)  and my pen started to dance. I completed the task within 40 minutes. Indeed, I was not different from others; I just needed a quieter place. If Louis could find his way to solve his problems, why should I ever give up?
I didn't expect anything when I handed in my paper to Mrs Smith, so it was quite a surprise when it came back to me the next day—with an “A” on it. At the bottom of the paper were these words: See what you can do when you keep trying?

Have you ever felt like you aren't respected by others? In a way like you are taken for granted (想当然) or not taken seriously? In one way or another, all of us have felt this. We hope to be regarded as an authority (权威), someone people respect and believe in. We're not taught in school how to do this. It's something we learn by ourselves. And the answer is as simple as changing your mindset. You can change your game by changing your mind.
Take the time to look back and think about every person in your life who is an authority, a leader at work who you trust, or the man who you respect and encourages you. They're up there not for the reasons you think. If you really think about it, they aren't the smartest or the most educated. Instead, they're up there because they're great teachers for the success of their customers or employees.
Let's take Richard Simmons, a famous fitness instructor, for example. He became wellknown since he started gaining popularity during the first few years in his career. Stop and think. People look up at him and give him authority because he's a great educator. Instead of sharing information that's far too difficult to understand, he figures out what your problems are and finds out a way to fix them. He doesn't try too hard to impress his followers because by now they're already pretty impressed with the desire to solve people's problems. Depending on what field you're in, you can share with people things you know and you think they'll want to know as well. If you're a nurse, for example, you can make a blog post for common health problems and quick remedies (疗法) people can do at home.
So, how will you be viewed as an authority again? Make that mind shift. Find out what troubles your target. Show your care, give answers and help them climb up that ladder of success. Ladies and gentlemen, that's how it's done.

If you're out for a run, what difference does it make if you're able to tough it out for another 50 seconds? If you're less than a minute from the top of the hill, that extra time can make the difference between having reached your goal and snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.
How do you get those extra seconds of energy? A research team at the Texas Tech University developed a study to measure what effect listening to music would have on exercise tolerance. The researchers based the study on a stress testing. As part of the testing, they noted any changes in heart rate and blood pressure as participants under went physically stressful exercise.
The tests were done on treadmills (跑步机), which increased in both speed and incline (坡度) through three stages. In the final stage, the treadmills moved at 10 miles per hour at a 14percent grade. Most of these tests were designed to last up to 40 minutes. The average gymgoers lasted 30 minutes. For this study, they divided 127 participants into two groups. One listened to upbeat (快节奏) music, while the other group had earbuds in but did not listen to music.
The group that listened to music was able to outlast the nonmusic group by an average of 50.6 seconds. Again, being able to go an extra minute may seem like a nobrainer, but after 30 minutes, you feel like you are running up a mountain, so even being able to go 50 seconds longer means a lot, said the study's lead author, Waseem Shami, MD.
The study has confirmed something runners and gymgoers have suspected for years: Listening to music during workout can be beneficial to your endurance. Our findings reinforce the idea that upbeat music can help you exercise longer and stick with a daily exercise routine, said Shami. “When doctors are recommending exercise, they might suggest listening to music, too.”
32.Why did Shami's team conduct the research?
A.To test the effect of music on health.
B.To know the cause of failure in sports.
C.To improve runners' exercise tolerance.
D.To record the body change of participants.
How do you get those extra seconds of energy? A research team at the Texas Tech University developed a study to measure what effect listening to music would have on exercise tolerance.
33.What did the researchers find about the participants in the stress testing?
A.They ran much faster than average runners.
B.They created a new record of indoor sports.
C.They could run a little longer with music on.
D.They all enjoyed extreme physical challenge.
The group that listened to music was able to outlast the nonmusic group by an average of 50.6 seconds.
34.What do the underlined words a nobrainer mean in paragraph 4?
A.A dull activity.          B.A foolish action.
C.A demanding task.          D.An easy practice.
根据下文中的but after 30 minutes, you feel like you are running up a mountain, so even being able to go 50 seconds longer means a lot’”可知,30分钟后你感觉自己好像在爬山,所以即使能多跑50秒也意义重大。
35.What did Shami suggest us doing in the last paragraph?
A.Developing a daily exercise routine.
B.Listening to music while working out.
C.Participating in physical stress testing.
D.Taking exercise as doctors recommend.

Five Steps to Better Handwriting
Some kids love handwriting, but others hate when it's time to put their pen to paper. Maybe they are worried about their handwriting. Are you one of them? 36. Here are five steps that really work!
Get a great grasp
Try this—hold your pencil at the top and try to write your name. Pretty hard? But when you hold your pencil the correct way, writing is much easier. 37. Hold it in place with your thumb, and your index (食指) and middle fingers.
Let the lines be your guide
Lined paper is your friend! Those lines can help you create letters that are the right size and proportion (均衡). 38. Also be sure to fill up the lined space completely. Those capital letters should be from the bottom line to the top one.
Slow down
If your writing is hard to read, try slowing down a little. If you rush, it's hard to control where you stop and start your letters.
Lower the pressure
39. That makes it harder to make the smooth lines. Try easing up and don't hold the pencil too tightly.
40.
Lots of games require you to write or draw pictures. So even though it's not schoolwork, you're still using the skills you need to control your pen better.
A.Play games
B.Ask for more advice
C.So “a” should be half the height of a capital “A”
D.You've been writing since you were a little kid.
E.Some kids press down really hard when they write.
F.The good news is that just about everyone can improve their handwriting.
G.The best way to hold a pen or pencil is to let it rest next to the base of your thumb.

Those lines can help you create letters that are the right size and proportion.可知,C选项(所以a应该是大写A的一半高)在语义上是因果关系,且选项中的A和a与上文提到的the right size、proportion相呼应。
That makes it harder to make the smooth lines.
Lots of games require you to write or draw pictures. 故选A。

One possible version
Dear Jim,
Having learned that you'll be a senior high school student, I am delighted. In your last email you mentioned that you were confused about how to study well in your senior high school. Now, I'd like to share my study tips with you.
First, you'd better communicate with your teachers regularly. In this way, they may offer some great advice on both your study and life. Second, why not involve yourself in each class actively, listen to the teacher attentively and take notes carefully so that you can review later? Third, it's a good idea to do your homework on time soon after school, which will help you practice what you have learned and make it fresh in your mind.
I sincerely hope my advice can be helpful to you and then you can enjoy your new school life. Best wishes!
Yours,
Li Hua
The Butterfly in a Bottle
Poltu was wide awake in his bed. He had had a marvelous dream in which he had won the football match in the interschool competition. He was getting ready to receive the trophy when the alarm rang, so loudly that it jarred him awake.
But Poltu wasn't too unhappy at the intrusion. He ran straight to his study table. There, in an empty jam bottle, was the treasure. A colourful little butterfly. How difficult it had been to catch it. It had kept flying away from his grasp. But catch it he did, without a net, too. And now it was going to be part of his biology project in school.
The biology project required Poltu to submit the study of a living creature every month. Most of his classmates drew diagrams from their books as part of this exercise. But Poltu was going to do something different. He was going to present a live creature—this butterfly.
Poltu loved the different colours on the wings of the butterfly, red, green and blue. How beautiful it looked when it fluttered the wings! Poltu had made a few holes on the cap of the bottle to let air pass through, and added tender leaves for the butterfly to nibble on. He might have trapped the creature, but he cared for it.
Excited about displaying his exhibit to the biology teacher, Poltu dressed hurriedly, and left for school. His school was walking distance from his house. He took a short cut through the backyard of Sinha aunty's house, a stretch he loved walking through. The breeze was very pleasant as it had rained slightly the previous night. The garden smelt of sweetsmelling flowers, jasmine and “mogra”. Poltu glanced at his bottle every now and then and smiled at the butterfly fluttering its wings.
When he reached school, the gate wasn't wholly open yet. For once Poltu was early to school. A few boys were playing football in the field. Any other day would have seen Poltu joining them without a second thought. But today, he walked straight into his class. He opened the bench window and placed the bottle on the windowsill.

One possible version
The golden rays of the sun streamed through the glass, on the delicate wings of the butterfly, and added a shine to them. The butterfly looked simply beautiful in the sunshine. In a few minutes, the window was surrounded with boys, looking admirably. In the biology class, Poltu's teacher praised him for presenting a live creature which made it possible for the class to study a living creature so closely. Poltu felt like a star.
While going back home, he again took his favourite route through Sinha aunty's garden. In the bottle, the butterfly didn't make a move. Poltu shook the bottle but still there was no response. Poltu was scared all of a sudden. He opened the lid and let in some fresh air, which made the butterfly move a little. Standing in the garden, and looking at a few birds jumping in the trees, Poltu slowly shook the bottle gently. The butterfly came out and then off it flew. Holding the empty bottle, he felt empty himself, but happy that he had sent the butterfly back to nature.
