Many times, sports events can be really competitive Athletes go through great stress both in their training and during performance, all for that number one position. For one Spanish athlete, Ivan Anaya, it was exactly that respect for the great hard work and devotion to the sports that made him lose on purpose.
During a cross-country race in Burlada, Navarre, the Kenyan athlete Abel Mutai was well ahead of Ivan. But then, thinking he had already reached the finish line, he started slowing down in his pace. He still had 10 meters ahead of him. Anyone else in second position might have taken advantage of that mistake but not Ivan. Ivan stayed behind Abel, and using hand signals, he guided Abel to the finish line.
Later, Ivan spoke about his decision, which might stun many people. Ivan said, “I just did what I had to do. He was the rightful winner. He was far ahead of me and I couldn’t have caught him up if he hadn’t made a mistake. As soon as I saw he was stopping, I knew I wasn’t going to pass him.”
Ivan’s coach, former Spanish runner Martin Fiz, said he would not have thought to do the same thing. “It was a very good gesture (姿态) of honesty,” said Fiz. “A gesture that I myself wouldn’t have made. I certainly would have taken advantage of it to win.”
Ivan hoped it would spread a message about the importance of honesty. “But I also think that having done what I did has earned more fame than if I had won,” he added. “And that is very important, because today in all circles, in soccer and in society, honesty is a must for a person to go far.”
4.Why did Abel slow down during the race?
A.He wanted to lose on purpose.
B.He was waiting for Ivan Anaya.
C.He was too tired to keep running.
D.He thought he had reached the end.
5.Why did Ivan refuse to take advantage of Abel’s mistake?
A.He felt very sorry for Abel.
B.He still couldn’t catch up with Abel.
C.He thought that Abel deserved to win.
D.He didn’t know what happened to Abel.
6.What does the underlined word “stun” in paragraph 3 mean?
A.Encourage.
B.Challenge.
C.Surprise.
D.Satisfy.
7.What does the author want to tell us through Ivan’s story?
A.Sports events can be really competitive.
B.Honesty is required in all fields of life.
C.Friendship is more important than winning.
D.Fairness is more important in competitions.

As the parent of two teenagers who have played multiple sports over the years, I’ve seen the good, the bad, the ugly and the absolutely cruel.
However, when I think about the value of sports and why my kids continue to play sports, I find that playing sports can help kids become successful adults. Through sports, kids learn how to work in teams, how to challenge themselves to be better, and how to behave when they lose and when they win. Whether kids play soccer, baseball, or football, they learn they are part of a team where one person depends on another.
When my son plays baseball, he’s not the only one who needs to play well; he depends on his defense to make the plays on the field. When my daughter plays tennis, she depends on her partner to cut off the ball at the net and win the point, and the tennis team depends on each person in order to win the overall match and become the champion. Sports also teach children to trust and respect the decisions of someone who understands how the entire team needs to work in order to succeed.
Sadly, though, youth sports have suffered from the “winning isn’t everything; it’s the only thing” attitude. They have become too much of a reflection of professional sports. Winning is a happy result, but the lessons from losing are even more important. When my daughter loses the tennis match, her coach reminds her that she shouldn’t lose heart and that she should learn more from losing than from winning. Losing makes you focus on improving your skills and your strategy. We’re going to learn from our mistakes and not repeat them.
I believe that participating in youth sports is much more than building a sound body. Sports are the best way to shape and build more self-motivated and happier children and help them become more self-motivated and happier adults.
8.What is the author’s attitude to youth sports?
A.Critical.        B.Positive.        C.Doubtful.        D.Unclear.
9.What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about?
A.What sports the author’s kids play.        B.What the value of sports is.
C.How sports benefit the kids.        D.Why the author’s kids continue to play sports.
10.What does the underlined part in paragraph 4 mean?
A.Teenagers don’t have to win every time.        B.Winning is the only goal for teen players.
C.Teenagers should work together to succeed.        D.Winning is not the most important in sports.
11.What is the best title for the text?
A.Youth Sports Build Better Adults        B.Teenagers Suffer from Youth Sports
C.Losing Brings More than Winning Does        D.Teenagers Perform Better than Adults in Sports

Is running a marathon (马拉松) under two hours possible? Will a human ever be able to run that fast? Now, the world record for the 42.195km (26.219 miles) distance is held by the Kenyan runner Eliud Kipchoge. His time of 2:01:39 hours was achieved at the Berlin Marathon of 2018.
But studies published in the past have come to the conclusion that running a marathon under 2 hours can be done. They even see a time of around 1:57 as the fastest a human can ever run. However, we may have to wait longer for this to happen.
To achieve an under two-hour marathon, an athlete would have to have the perfect body size and weight, the right running plans and of course, the right nutrition (营养). Today’s perfect runners come from Kenya and Ethiopia, countries that have dominated (占优势) long distance races for years. East African athletes have long legs and lungs that can take in lots of oxygen (氧). Training at high altitudes (海拔) gives them a strong heart. Ideal weather conditions with cool temperatures and no wind will also be needed to attempt such a mark. An extremely fast marathon would only be possible on flat city courses, like Berlin or London.
Since the beginning of the modern Olympic Games in 1896, athletes have tried to run long distance races as fast as possible. In 1900, the marathon world record was at around 3 hours. In the following 30 years, men were able to reach a mark of 2:30. But in the last 15 years, the world record has improved by only 3 minutes.
On the other side, some experts think that such fast performances will only be possible with the help of some medicine.
12.Why is the world record mentioned in Paragraph 1?
A.To show a human can run very fast.
B.To prove Eliud Kipchoge is the best.
C.To introduce the greatest success in the world.
D.To show an under two hour marathon hasn’t been achieved yet.
13.Why is it difficult to see a time of around 1:57?
A.It requires too many things to fit together.
B.It isn’t easy to find right running plans.
C.Training a perfect runner takes a long time.
D.Kenyan and Ethiopian runners control marathons.
14.Which of the following may be important for an under two-hour marathon?
A.High altitudes.        B.Lots of oxygen.
C.A perfect environment.        D.Tall and strong runners.
15.What can we learn from Paragraph 4?
A.Men will run faster and faster.
B.Men made the greatest progress in 1930.
C.Achieving shorter time became more difficult.
D.It’s impossible to break the marathon world record.

Christine closed the door to Anna’s room. Inside, her classmate and friend had fallen asleep. Downstairs, Christine’s mom, Donna, was grasping Anna’s mother Sheila around the shoulders. “We should go,” she said. “Get some rest, huh?” Sheila nodded, blew her nose, and then waved them goodbye.
On the car riding home, Christine worked up the courage to ask the question on her mind, “Mom? Why was Sheila weeping?” She thought she knew the answer, of course: Anna’s cancer. In the past, Anna had been the neighborhood do-gooder, always going door to door for various causes: the local animal shelter, suffering children in Africa, or the families who’d lost their homes to fire. Now Anna could barely feed or dress herself. Christine thought it so unfair when bad things like this happened to good people.
“Well, it’s complex, but I guess you’re old enough to understand.”
“Understand what?”
“Understand that Anna is sick, yes, but Anna actually gets a lot of help. The government helps pay for a lot of her medicine. She gets meals delivered to her by a nonprofit. She even gets massages from local volunteers.”
“Wow!”
“Her life’s still very hard, of course, and no one would trade places with her, but when you have cancer, everyone can see that you need help,” continued Donna. “They don’t always see that the people around you are suffering.”
“People like Sheila?”
“Yes, did you know that Sheila took a break from her job to stay home with Anna?”
“No!” Christine was surprised. She had never thought about who took Anna to her appointments, or fed her when she was too weak to lift a spoon. Of course it was her family.
“Yes. So that means that many of the things they used to do with that extra money are all out the window now. They’re even worried now about keeping the house.”
“Their house? So Anna might have to move, while she’s sick?”
“If she doesn’t get better soon, and the bills keep piling up...” Donna pulled into the driveway, and just in time. Her cheeks were shining with tears.
Paragraph 1:
“There has to be something done for them,” Christine said firmly to their classmates and friends.

Paragraph 2:
But the best part of the party was when Anna came through the door with her family, attracted with promises of chocolate cake and live music.

根据第三段中的“Depending on the volunteer work you do with us, you may be required to provide a police certificate to DOC.”
根据International students 部分中的“However, DOC does not offer opportunities to students who study at universities outside New Zealand, or other education providers outside New Zealand.”
根据文章第一段中的“If you’re visiting New Zealand and would like to volunteer, DOC (Department of Concentration) welcomes you to get involved.” You may need a police certificate部分中的“How to get a new police certificate if you’re already in New Zealand.
根据第二段第二句“But then, thinking he had already reached the finish line, he started slowing down in his pace.(但随后,他认为自己已经到达了终点线,开始放慢速度)”可知,Abel认为自己已经到达了终点,所以慢了下来,故选D。
根据第三段中Ivan所说的话“He was the rightful winner. He was far ahead of me and I couldn’t have caught him up if he hadn’t made a mistake. As soon as I saw he was stopping, I knew I wasn’t going to pass him.(他是合法的赢家。他走在我前面很远,如果他没有犯错误,我不可能赶上他。我一看到他停下来,就知道我不会超过他)”可知,他认为Abel如果没有出现失误,自己是不可能超越他的。由此可知,Ivan认为自己不应该获胜,Abel应该获胜,故选C。
6.词义猜测题。根据第二段中“Anyone else in second position might have taken advantage of that mistake but not Ivan.(其他处于第二位置的人可能会利用这个错误,但Ivan没有)”以及第四段首句“Ivan’s coach, former Spanish runner Martin Fiz, said he would not have thought to do the same thing.(Ivan的教练,前西班牙跑步运动员Martin Fiz说他没想过去做同样的事情)”可知,在胜利唾手可得的时候,Ivan却选择了放弃,这一举动无疑自然令人震惊,故画线词所在句意为“后来,Ivan谈到了他那可能会让很多人感到震惊决定”,stun意为“使震惊”,故选C。
根据最后一段尤其是“And that is very important, because today in all circles, in soccer and in society, honesty is a must for a person to go far.(这是非常重要的,因为在今天的所有圈子里,在足球和社会中,诚实是一个人想要走得更远的必要条件)”可知,Ivan认为,我们在社会生活的方方面面都需要诚实,这也是作者想要通过这个故事表达的观点,故选B。
8.B    9.C    10.B    11.A
根据第三段最后一句“Sports also teach children to trust and respect the decisions of someone who understands how the entire team needs to work in order to succeed.(体育运动还教会孩子们信任和尊重那些理解整个团队需要如何工作才能成功的人的决定)”可推知,作者对年轻人的运动态度是积极的。故选B。
根据第二段“However, when I think about the value of sports and why my kids continue to play sports, I find that playing sports can help kids become successful adults. Through sports, kids learn how to work in teams, how to challenge themselves to be better, and how to behave when they lose and when they win. Whether kids play soccer, baseball, or football, they learn they are part of a team where one person depends on another.(然而,当我思考运动的价值以及为什么我的孩子们继续运动时,我发现运动可以帮助孩子们成为成功的成年人。通过体育运动,孩子们学会了如何团队合作,如何挑战自我,变得更好,以及在失败和胜利时如何表现。无论孩子们踢足球、棒球还是足球,他们都知道他们是一个团队的一部分,其中一个人依赖另一个人)”可知,第二段讲的是“运动怎样有利于孩子”,故选C。
10.句意猜测题。根据第四段“They have become too much of a reflection of professional sports. Winning is a happy result, but the lessons from losing are even more important.(他们已经过多地反映了职业体育运动。
故选A。
12.D    13.A    14.C    15.C
根据文章第二段“But studies published in the past have come to the conclusion that running a marathon under 2 hours can be done.(但过去发表的研究得出的结论是,2小时以内的马拉松是可以完成的)”可知,第一段的作用是引出主题,举 Eliud Kipchogep的例子是为了说明人们还没有实现在两小时内跑完马拉松。故选D。
根据文章第三段“To achieve an under two-hour marathon, an athlete would have to have the perfect body size and weight, the right running plans and of course, the right nutrition (营养). 故选A。
根据文章第三段“Ideal weather conditions with cool temperatures and no wind will also be needed to attempt such a mark.(理想的天气条件,低温和无风,也将需要尝试这样的标志)”可知,完美的环境条件对于在两小时内完成马拉松十分重要。故选C。
根据文章第四段“In 1900, the marathon world record was at around 3 hours. In the following 30 years, men were able to reach a mark of 2:30. But in the last 15 years, the world record has improved by only 3 minutes.(1900年,马拉松世界纪录是3小时左右。在接下来的30年里,男性能够达到2:30。但在过去的15年里,世界纪录只提高了3分钟)”可知,马拉松的记录在一开始提高很快,但到了后来,获得一点突破都需要花费很长的时间。由此推知,马拉松达到更短的时间变得越来越困难。故选C。
16.D    17.E    18.A    19.C    20.F

47.Paragraph 1:
“There has to be something done for them,” Christine said firmly to their classmates and friends. They decided to work together to organize a fundraising party. After some careful preparations, the day of the party arrived. They were surprised to see a line of people waiting for the party to start. Everyone who’d been touched by Anna’s good deeds had come to return the favor: the animal shelter employees, the families losing their houses, plus many strangers. All together, they raised several thousands of dollars, more money than Christine had ever expected.
Paragraph 2:
But the best part of the party was when Anna came through the door with her family, attracted with promises of chocolate cake and live music. Sheila saw the photos of Anna on the walls and started to weep. And Anna just sat there smiling as Christine held her tightly. “I am never going to give up,” Anna whispered. “But I am afraid they are going to. Now, they know that they no longer go unnoticed and have a family to take care of them when they’re too tired.” “No way,” Christine said, motioning to the group of teenagers who had come to her aid, to the roomful of neighbors all singing together. “We’re all family.”
